Today's Hunt

Got to go out again today.  Not as exciting as last time, but still got two.  Took the '06 this time since it's been in the safe for about a year and I'll deer hunt with it this season.  First pig was in a group of 5 and they were all in a line side-by-side facing away from me.  Not a shot I would take with the .223, but with the '06 a butt-shot will still kill them (I do this for population control and not the meat...the landowner wants them dead...all of them).  Second was just a bit larger and presented a nice broadside shot.  My daughter and I had a good time.

I'm in central Texas.  You should have hogs in your area...or at least nearby.  Start a new topic asking about hunting in TN....there are a few members here from there I believe.

Maximus, You have tons of hogs in the Crossville area. I grew up there. I come home a couple times a year to hunt with my family. I killed three Thanksgiving morning. you should check around Jamestown or Clarkrange. People who have them on thier land will usually let you hunt them.  Just remember hogs range alot  here today and gone tommorrow to return when ever. look for luarel thickets on creeks or rivers and the hogs will be there, eventually

Thanks Doug.  We don't grow them with as big of tusks as your northern monsters.  I guess they wear them down on our hard soil.  I shot a 300+ boar a while back and his tusks were only about 2".  It also looks like those northern hogs have more russian in them.  I've seen a few boars here that look like that, but most are ferals with a bit of russian mixed in.  My buddy shot a nice sow the other day.  I'll post the pic in the picture thread.

Any hog is a good one.  I'm beginning to get a bit jaded with the big hogs.  This one had 2" solid inches of fat/gristle plate in the front end and about 1" over the rest of the hide.  The meat yield was small, probably 80lbs, had the same thing with the one I shot last September.  Hogs up here grow fat because of the cold and the ample feed.  Tusks are catch as catch can.  Not easily mountable because they split after a few years.  I suspect they have a lot of russian/european in them...after all they come from the farms in Canada I suspect.

Looks like the hogs are a lot like the deer.  Ya'll grow them big up there....we just grow a lot of them....I mean a lot!  I think they estimated the deer in the Llano basin (where I live) to be somewhere between 250,000 to 350,000.  That an area about the size of Rhode Island.  Hogs seem to be that way as well.  We've got a lot, mostly ferals from domestic pigs released a couple of decades ago mixed with a little russian, but on average they're about 125lbs.  But they sure are fun.

Doug, wife and I had breakfast for supper the other night with some of the sausage from the boar I got in Vt. very good eating. Six_gunz got the spicy stuff while I opted for the country sausage. My film from this hunt didn't come out very well(Kodak disposible camera, probably the dummy behind the camera) so six_gunz pics are the only stuff I have available. Steve's wife fixed the same on the night we returned from Vt. with some of his sausage, very good also.
