encore breech plug and other ?'s
« on: September 20, 2008, 04:12:39 PM »
Hi all. I have a new encore with about 30? rounds through it. The first shooting session I put about 12 or so down range and took it home to clean. Right away I noticed that the breech plug was really fowled up bad in the primer pocket. I was using between 90 and 100 gr. JS All Gold loose powder with remington primers and trying different bullet types. I was running a wet patch between shots T/C #13 and then a few dry. I admit, I could have been putting too much #13 down the barrel and if so, would this cause a problem if it built up in the primer pocket during shooting? Possibly from seeping through the flash hole? There was also a ring of fowling around the firing pin which was a real pita to clean. I was also firing a couple of primers before loading every shot.

Anyway I didn't quite get all the fowling out of the primer hole and put some more powder through over the next few weeks since first session. I realized my cleaning practice was not good enough and really gave it a good cleaning this time. So I got all the fowling out and the breech plug is now clean but, it now has what looks like some sort of flame cutting in the primer hole? The flash hole looks good. It's just inside the area you seat the primer. Sort of like scratches or cuts, so I'm guessing flame cutting? I don't know. ??? My question is, Is this going to affect accuracy or anything else in a bad way? Or should I just shoot it and not think about, lesson learned?  I was also thinking if I decided to try the .25acp conversion i the future, this plug would be a perfect candidate for it. What do you think?

Also I'm just curious, if I was to cut off the QLA, what would I do about the extra length of the ram rod? Can this be cut and re-used or would I need to buy a custom length rod?  Thanks,    jammer

One more thing. :) What do you encore guys do about cleaning inside the frame, and internal working parts? Do you strip it down frequently, or is this not an issue? Thanks,    jammer

Can you post a picture of the gas cutting in the primer pocket/flame channel? This phenomenon shows up from time to time with the T/C plugs. I think this is something that T/C needs to address, I'm sure if you call them they would probably send you a new plug since you only have 30 rounds of JSG through it.

The .25 ACP conversions work great. The ramrod can be shortened. You will want to clean out the spring and firing pin area for sure.

Please post a pic of your plug, I know someone that would be interested in seeing it. He has a G2, and had something similar going on with his plug after firing just a few shots of BH209. I have seen other pics of T/C Plugs with gas cutting, it must be a material issue. Call T/C and tell them you want a new plug!

Thank you Busta. :) I'll call TC as soon as I can find time. things are sort of hectic right now. I was thinking I'd just buy a new one and save this one for when I find time to try the .25acp conv... Sounds like it would be better to let TC know about this though. At least so they can address the problem if this is inherent to their plugs. I can't post pics but I'd be glad to send them to anyone who wanted them by regular usps.

Thanks again. Let me know if you want me to send pics to anyone.
