How deep?
« on: September 22, 2008, 05:31:20 AM »
When I was reading the essentials post I noticed I was the only person that carried a cat shovel.  You know, one of those little orange backpacking shovels you use to make a personal hole other wise known as a cat hole ::)  Am I the only one with woods etiquette Heck I even dig a hole when I urinate in order to cut the scent.  I generally like to find a fir or pine tree because the dirt is very soft under then and the needles will help cover any residual scent.
I just have one nagging question.  How effective are my efforts, how deep do you have to dug before the critters can't smell it?

I left "personal etiquette" out of the "essentials" equation but mentioned use of a pee bottle.  "Go" at camp, where it is set up for stuff to go.

No space for a shovel in my pack.  I hunt close to home, so rarely have to crap in the woods.  It's private ground, not worried about what anybody thinks.

The way I see (smell??) it, every other animal is busting a grumpy in the woods, so why shouldn't I?  I'm sure my "scat" doesn't smell any worse or offend the deer's nose any more than a coyote or possum or some other critter that's been eating any nasty stuff that they come upon.   :P

I do dig a hole or use some other method to make sure I don't step in it though.  Stepping in crap is bad enough, stepping in my own, well, I think the only thing worse is shooting myself or falling on my knife and stabbing myself.   :-\ :-[

I'm pretty sure mine doesn't stink, I've always been lucky that way.  A dip of Copenhagen soon as my feet hit the floor keeps me in the game till dark thirty when I'm headed home for sure. I've heard a cup of coffee and a cigarette will work also.

No.  deer and pigs will react to anything out of the ordinary.  I stink.  While hunting one time I had the call from nature, I went to a big pine dug a hole and was about to finish the paper work when the wind shifted.  I heard a loud roar 20 yards behind me.  It was a large bear and he was leaving town fast!  Another hunter came down the hill not long after surprised by the bear that came running by him.  I LOL as I explained that I was the only thing in the woods that smelled worse that that bear.

ROFLMAO...  I can picture it now...the bear is just poking along, enjoying the smell of fresh pine in the air, mayhap indulging in some berries along the way when...OMG what the hell is THAT smell???  OMG, it smells like something just died....OMG I better get out of here before the vapors take me down... ha ha ha.

At least you were already in the "position" and had gotten it taken care of in a timely and clean manner.  If you'd been having to hold it, and then surprised the bear, well, I hope you had on Scent-Lok pants.....

I make a motion to declare that from here on, the official abbreviation of BS no longer stands for bull-s#*t, but now stands for bear-s#*t.  Does anyone second the motion?  LOL

It's beginning to sound like a grade school class each trying to come up with something they think is funnier than the last one, so let's get back on topic of deer hunting here or move it somewhere else before I lock it up.   Jim

I personally don't worry about it. If I am hunting on the move I just go. If in a stand I try to get as far away as possible. Preferably the opposite direction I think the deer are gonna come from.

You guys really don't understand,  That was a true story and I don't want to leave a scent >:(
I was on top of a hill where I normally saw at least 10 to 20 doe and was hoping to see a buck.  That morning I didn't see anything.  I started to still hunt and found the reason why!  Some fool felt the call of nature and there was a large pile and wind blown paper for over 25 yards!  I wasn't happy!  Critters don't know the human scent, they just know the scent they smell is different and that sets of their alarm!
How deep do you have to dig?
