.17HMR for deer
« on: September 22, 2008, 05:49:38 AM »
While I would never use anything smaller than a .243 for deer myself, I overheard Bubba in the Panama City Walmart last night talking about killing deer out to 250 yards with his Savage 17HMR.  This is illegal in FL by the way.  I asked him to be sure I'd heard him correctly.  He said he'd killed several with his .17HMR and they dropped instantly.

That's scary, sad and funny.  Hopefully he gets caught.

His calculated 250 yards is probably a true 75 yards.

Are Florida deer over 30 lbs?  (just kidding)

A "big" buck might go 125lbs to 150lbs.  In this part of FL there isn't a lot in the way of food.  My son killed a pretty nice nine point last year.  I believe it was around 150lbs.  Many of our deer are actually an Alabama sub-species so they are a tad larger than real FL deer.

That was done with Sierra Infinity 5.1, I was surprised they had 17hmr and 17M2 included in the data base! But there are free calculators online.  ;)

Hummer is big medicine on small deer...YEAH.

Well, it's long been said that the poachers favorite rounds are the .22LR and the .22 Mag.....I'm sure that the .17HMR is right up there too.  With it's velocity and accuracy, I guess if you wanted to take head shots, it would probably still penetrate at 250yds, especially the 20gr loads.  They aren't too worried about wounding them either.  Sooo....??

I have to agree with yooper, his 250yds is 75yds, or maybe 250 ft. Bubba gets a big DUH.  I bet he saw that video where someone killed a hog with a Gamo Air rifle and thought, golly gee, I can go deer huntin' with my hummer now....

He did mention it was no good for squirrels & rabbits because there wasn't much left to eat.

I can vouch for that, if it's not a head shot, you ain't going to eat it.  Well, if you like them in strips, you could probably still eat them.   ;)

If there is one thing that I cannot stand, it is people using ridiculously underpowered rifle cartridges on game. I mean, you certainly don't need a 460 Weatherby for deer, but a sensible minumum like a .243 or some such can be handled comfortably by just about anyone. OUr game deserves it. I know that most sportsman can see the folly, but I am afraid that some youngster or someone new to the sport might read this and try it.  Ok I'm off the soap box.

Did he pay with cash or credit card?

Did you follow him out of the store and get a license number off of the car he was in?

Do you know him personally?

Did you snap his picture with your cell phone?

Does the store employee know him?

If you saw him again could you point him out?

Stupid Poacher Bubba.

It is, as you said, illegal to hunt deer in FL with rim fire cartridges and hearing you talk about it incites others to try.  Pity.

I doubt it

It takes proof to convict.  I'm guessing the proof has already been eaten.  His Bubba friend was buying a Savage in .17HMR while he offered advise on which pos scope to put on it.  It didn't actually occur to me that it was illegal until sometime after I left the store.  FL doesn't have a min. caliber for deer but it does prohibit the use of rimfires.  At the time I witnessed this I was just thinking how stupid it was.

I'd bet money he was telling the truth.  He wasn't really bragging.  It was just an off the cuff remark.

Wasn't there a law enforcement officer busted a while back for poaching with a HMR?

I think if I was the guy behind the counter, I would have refused to sell this guys buddy anything when hearing this story.  Not sure about Florida, but here in Ohio they can refuse to sell for any reason.

When something like this gets out to the liberal media, it just makes all us hunters look bad.  What a shame.
