What do you take for a day trip ?
« on: September 22, 2008, 08:42:39 AM »
Sometimes Mama and myself will just go out for a little day trip at one of the state parks and always have a small pack along , in it you will find a first aid kit , solar blanket , 25 feet of 3/8" rope , 2 extra bottles of water , an extra long sleave t-shirt and a pistol with 20 rounds of ammo .

As these trips do not involve a long distance , not more than 8 or 10 miles , this will get us by till one or the other can get to help if need be .

What would you take for such a trip ?

Most important thing to take on such a trip... Toilet Paper!
Try laughing if you don't have it!

Whoa, Stimpy, do you need a concealed carry permit to have the handgun in a backpack here in Ohio?  I was amazed at the phobia against them when we got here.  We drove from Bellingham, Washington and saw nothing the whole trip across country where folks were worried about guns, not even in Illinois.  Then we hit the Ohio border and the first rest area we came to had a sign concerning no firearms allowed.  So what is the story about carrying in a backpack?

You didn't include anything to start a fire in your pack, surely you have something.Although I still carry them, I don't trust matches much anymore, seems the quality of new production stinks. I carry a butane lighter too, and usually a starter like wax paper as well.

Why 3/8 rope? Parachute cord will hold anything you would want to do with it and it will lash and tie things much more securely than the large dia stuff.

We made and carried survival packs in Alaska. The other guys made big ones like the size you are talking about. I made a tiny one that fit an a big pocket. Two emergency blankets, firestarter, a cornflake bar ration from Army survival kit and other stuff I can't remember. Had to use it too. Spent a night out at 30 below, not a big deal because I was able to make a fire and the emergency blankets kept me dry.

A note on Ohio! We got pulled over by a state trooper just because we were from Colorado and he said a lot of drugs come from there. He made some lame excuse but from my questions he became uncomfortable and issued a warning for following too close(there was nobody in front of me at all). Ohio, from what I have heard, is like a police state. Anyway back to the subject at hand, I carry about what you do. I took my survival training at Bragg and one instructor told us if we had a knife and fire makings we could survive. I have very good knives plus lots of fire starter. One really good one is cut up bicycle inner tubes. Rubber starts easily and is hard to put out, even when soaking wet. Small candles are also in the list, the kind that relight. I carry my Charter Arms 3" Pathfinder and Velocitors(box of 50). Lots of birds, rabbits here and water so where we go I feel safe. Since I was born here, many years ago, I also have good feel for where logging roads etc are and have always been good on direction. Fun hobby for 50 years!(don't forget a good camera) elk and moose are where we go!

Up till a few years ago Ohio was quite anal about handguns , now that we have the CC law it has laxed somewhat , as for the pistol in the pack its one of those out of sight , out of mind things , but yes to be totaly legal one would need a CC permit if it was carried Loaded .

However it would be total legal to have it in the pack Unloaded with out a CCW permit , one of those catch 22 things and to top it all off a person CAN carry a loaded handgun in the open just about anywere in the state and be total legal .

For a fire starter , I smoke so I always have my Zippo and a Bic for back-up .
