While out scouting the other day.........
« on: September 22, 2008, 01:38:08 PM »
Well this is still a bit early but Bowhunting season is going on..... lucky me this is on private land that I have.  Our general season opens October 26th - Nov 30th.  There have been other sightings of larger bucks that frequent our 200 acres here which is what I am looking for.

Nice scoutin trip there our boys are still wearing a good bit of velvet.
Me being a lefty I would say the one on the left is in perfect range of my ol 45.
General gun opens here on Thanksgiving day.
Best of luck on the bigger ones.   Larry

Little Spike along with the big boy...those little ones are just as presistant though and this guy will be wearing gouges in his hide when the rut comes in.

I have been out to my (area 1) and cleaned up the shooting lanes a little. I was at (area 2) recently and thought that a doe had busted me from the high ground. The wind is not right for that was my first thought. What had happened was she winded a large black Coyote in a deadfall. She made so much racket that the Coyote chose to slip on down a small drainage
And I could see its ears along with part of the head and upper shoulders bobbing in & out of view as it was broadside to me and perhaps 45yds away while working its way on down to my elevation on the foot hill.

I would swear that it was a subconsious act but I found myself down on my left knee with my left shoulder shored up against a tree. I had drawn the .45 Vaquero from its crossdraw holster but by the time I realized it that big .45 was cocked and lined out dead ahead of me  ;D (read great fun) If that Coyote turned left, it would belong to me but it chose to turn right and I barely got a glimps of it as it remained hidden while moving away from me.

End Of Story...Most of you to include myself have had similar and more exciting experiences but the point is that while a lot of us claim not to be fast, we always seem to be fast enough when it counts. While I did not get my quarry this still made for an exciting and impromptu mini hunt. The whole experience in general reinforces why our sport is called Hunting...not Killing as the #@=##% bleeding heart, Chromosome short, tree hugging Liberals claim.

Good point but my chances of calling him in will be good between the end of Nov to the end of Feb. He will just get a dirt nap if this happens though as the fur buyers wont take the black ones due to hair slippage as they are reported to be a cross between the Coyote & the domestic dog.

Dang, must be nice!  Out here in Kaliforniastan you can only shoot bucks and even then only two if you can find them.  Can't fill a freezer with these little Blacktail :-[

Yep it is nice when we have private land to hunt on as I do in this area there is 200 acres and in another area I have much more where I can have 5 doe tags for because the farm is now been caught into a muzzleloader, handgun, shotgun or bow only district where no high power centerfire rifles can be used like before.

I'm a lucky man to live where I do.

BTW Catfish it would have been real easy to have hit that big buck from where I was standing, but I got to play by the rules.  I was carrying my 629 6" just in case there was any black bears present.  But right now the whitetail walk and and I shoot them with a camera.  I know I can't eat the picture, but I also have it forever too.

I've always felt that if you can get one with a camera you can do it with your hunt tool of choice.

Nice buck ya bagged there.
