10mm for hunting
« on: September 22, 2008, 04:51:47 PM »
I've got a chance to get a colt delta elite and was wondering if it would make a good deer hunting gun for short range

The 10mm is capable enough within reasonable ranges and the Delta Elite is a really decent handgun whether you use it for hunting or not.  Mikey.

It should be entirely adequate within the range to which you can accurately place your bullets in the kill zone. I suspect with such a gun that's gonna be 50 yards or less but then I'm not a fan of semiautos for other than self defense and don't personally see them as proper hunting tools.

I agree with bill. Ive seen a few pigs hit by good cast loads and it killed very well. In my opinion its a much better choise then a 357

Sure it will work in it's range, under 50 yards and if the shooter is proficient with it. Are there better choice, sure there are.

And what Lloyd said.

For deer take a look at the 200 grain Hornady XTP bullet.

I agree, up to 50 yards or so the 10mm should work well on small to medium game. For deer I would use the hotest 180gr jackedted hollowpoints you can find. I carry my glock 20 loaded with buffalo bore's 180gr Speer Gold Dots loaded to 1350 fps, and they seam to bring out this calibers full potential. The only big game I have taken with it so far was a 175lb hog at about 25 yards. I hit him right behind the shoulder and I found the slug under his hide on the off side after going thrugh a rib.

As far as what the other guys are saying about a 10mm auto not being the best deer killer, I must agree, the best and easyist thing to use would be a rifle!  ;) But thats not why we hunt with handguns, now is it!

I think ol Ted Nuggent hunts with a Glock 20 in 10mm with the longer hunting barrel.

Bill, your like me as I would rather be hunting with a DA or SA revolver..... but what the heck do we know anyway.

ted actually shot a rhino with his. They aired the episode on tv once and it was a pretty sad exibition of killing power and hunting ethics but then thats ted!
