Anyone know what 30/06 black tipped ammunition is
« on: September 22, 2008, 05:38:46 PM »
I got a bunch of 06 ammunition from a friend and some of it has a painted black tip. What does that mean?

I will let others pitch in as well but my Black tipped is AP ammo.  Armor Piercing.  LAst I knew it was $1 a round...I promise its more than that now :)

It may be something else, I am not a cartridge expert by my opinion.

Banned from possession or sale? I just got about 120 rounds of that and the same amount in  1962, Lake City Match ammo and don't really have a use for it. What would the Match ammo be worth?

In most places AP isn't banned.  It may be corrosive primed.  Even the match might be corrosive primed.

American aresnal made ammo dated after 1955 will all be non-corrosive. Black tips would indicate armor piercing. Both are of an evlevated value in todays market.

I've been told that some match ammo had corrosive primers long after it's use was discontinued in other mil-spec ammo.  The corrosive primers were thought to be more accurate.

Be careful if you go to a public range with the AP.  That could get you kicked off the range, a lot of them don't allow any ammo that AP or tracer, etc.

I've been kicked off the range for shooting M118 match because the range officer wasn't smart enough to know what he was looking at.

I don't know about 06 match but 7.62 match ammo was very accurate in my rifle. Of course all it is good for is punching targets so if it was worth much I would sell it and buy some reloading componants.

M72 Match ammunition is all non-corrosive primed.  The black tipped '06 is armor piercing as discussed. It may or may not be corrosive. Non-corrosive AP '06 ammunition; "FA post 51, SL post 52, LC post 52, TW post 52, WRA post 54.

Funny you should post this Larry.  It is the exact question I asked myself last night.  Do you know if the SL date goes for ball ammo also?  I should imagine it does.

I had 2 AP rounds and removed the bullets then removed the gilding metal and lead to get to the tungsten carbide studs. My GS used the studs from 06 & 50bmg rounds as center punches to mark case hardened 03A3 receivers for drilling and tapping for scope bases and other gun shop work.I use the studs to imprint metal for drilling or riveting.

If you have access to a range where the AP has been fired you can find the cores lying around on the ground. I picked up several that had been fired by ROTC when I was in college and still use them for punches. Never seen anything so hard.

Sorry for the late answer, I just relooked at this thread.  The first lot of SL with non corrosive primers was 9420 of 5-52.
