side to side movement??
« on: September 23, 2008, 09:58:27 AM »
my barrel wiggles just a bit side to side but is quite solid up and down. Is this normal or something I need to find a way to fix??
Thanks,

The movement you describe is normal.  The way to "fix it" is with an oversized hinge pin.

Okie,

Gotta have some more info from you. Did you just buy this barrel? Is the barrel a T\C or some other brand? Did you just buy the frame? Is it a used Contender, G-2, or Encore...or new G-2 or Encore?

IMHO oversize hinge pins are a POS.

Over size hinge pins fix NOTHING. They merely line the pocket of he who sells them to your detriment.

it is a used encore I picked up at a gunshow and it is an encore heavy barrel in 25-06. I think with a little work I will be able to make this thing shoot pretty good. Should I start with floating the forearm or what? I also have a used 209x50 frame and all coming next week sometime so any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,

Encore frames and barrels are guaranteed for life....even if your not the original owner...unless they have been obviously abused.  I would give T\C a call and tell them the problem and see what they have to say about it.

BTW, you say you have a 209x50 "Frame" coming....do you mean you have the complete Encore with the frame and 209x50 barrel? Or do you mean you have just the barrel coming?

If you have another frame coming, I would say just try attaching your 25-06 barrel to the new frame and see if you still have the wiggle.

But in any event, I would still contact T\C and see what they have to say and\or will do about it.

You stated that it moves, side to side.  You didn't say how it shoots.  To me, if it shoots good(to your standards) then there is no problem there to fix. I have various amounts of side wiggle in several of my barrels and I don't consider it a problem.  For my money, "tinkering" with the forend is MUCH more rewarding.  GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt  ;)

I have an entire ML coming. The 25-06 shoots pretty well as is. I think I am flinching from a sorry scope hurting more than anything but I changed that last night. It does not need fixed but I like to tinker and make them better. Have Remington I played with and shoot under 1/2 inch at 100.

Obviously there are two very different opinions on over sized hinge pins. Keep in mind these are .001-.002" oversize. I have never used one because all of my frames and barrel combinations are tight. It stands to reason that if there is slop in either of the frame holes, the barrel hole, the existing pin or combination of parts that a very slightly larger pin would eliminate that. Whether it makes the guns shoot better or not is something only you can determine.

Just a side note. I have several 'factory original hinge pins'. I have found more than .001" difference in the cross section of them. This would mean to me that an over size pin may not be oversize at all.

Well....if your happy with it....then by all means...tinker with the forarm and float away. Floating the forarm seems to help consistent accuracy on the T\C's. It has on mine.
