LBT bullets in Ruger Old Army?
« on: September 23, 2008, 11:45:03 AM »
I seem to recall many years ago that LBT offered a bullet for the Ruger Old Army. I had just looked at the information on the website and that doesn't seem to be the case.

I was wondering if an LBT mold can be made up for the Ruger Old Army? If so, what are the characteristics of that bullet such as weight and accuracy. Thanks

I have never listed a bullet specifically for any gun, but make each mold to customer spec.  This means you have many options for your Ruger, including the authentic Keith bullet developed for the old Colts etc.
Regarding accuracy.  Because LBT molds are tracer lathe bored, they produce the most precision bullets you'll get from any mold, and they are cut to the optimum diameter for your gun.  These two factors coupled with the fact that all LBT offerings are designed of optimum accuracy, you'll get the best accuracy your gun can deliver from any mold when you choose an LBT bullet mold. All the designs in my catalog were designed by myself except the Keith, which is just his design as exact as I know how to make them working from available old samples.  I offer these for people who want HIS bullets, and offer modified spinoffs of his design for calibers which Elmer didn't design bullets for.

Measure your gun, modify it slightly if measurements dictate doing so, and get an LBT mold.  It will shoot better than you ever dreamed it could.

Veral,  I think he is talking about a BLACK POWDER revolver not a typical blackhawk.  I had been curious of the same.  There's got to be a better bullet design to bring those front stuffed revolvers into the 21st century, especially one with the strength of the Ruger Old Army.

it can be done and can follow the advice veral gave you. I had a mold made (mistakenly) by another mold maker that allows you to design your own and had both a swc and a wfn cut to fit a old army. I would make one suggestion to you if you do the same. have veral cut a small bevel base to the bullet as the flat based bullets were miserable to try to get seated straight and if they were seated straight they sprayed like a garden hose. I had dave clements back bore my cylinder to hold about 8 more grains of powder and could get an easy 900 fps with a 240 grain bullet. Plenty for any deer or black bear hunting.

I bought a pair of after market cylinders for my ROA that already have about 10gr addotional powder space.  They fit and lined up like factory.  I started light but increased to the max space allowed and still had great accuracy with the old round ball loas.  I've got the Lee mold for conical and it spreads with anything above light loads 30gr max.

I make bullets for any gun that goes bang if caliber is between 22 and 8 bore, but I sure don't catalog them all on my website!  Please contact me by email, let me know what you want and I'll make it.
