One gun???
« on: September 24, 2008, 03:18:37 AM »
I'm bored...

If you could only own one gun with no barrel swapping allowed, what would it be???  Why?

Remington 700 Boone&Crockett in .30-06, because  I'm a deer hunter first and foremost.

DPMS SDMR w/ a 4x ACOG...  That would fit the bill for anything I would want to do.  Deer hunt, Varmint Hunt, Self Defense.
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

If ammo is not an issue 20MM Vulcan.  Good for anything from ground squirrels to foreign countries.

If it was just ONE gun, for all serious hunting/self-defense/tactical/target use, WOW, that would be a hard choice.  A DPMS in .260 Rem would probably be the best choice ballistically, but the .308 would win because of the practical availability of ammo.  I'd have to give such a gun serious consideration.

BUT, I'm not a huge fan of the AR format though.  So I think that perhaps a Mini-30 that's been fully accurized by one of the companies that specialize in them would be what I go with, as the 7.62x39 will do for deer-sized game out to 200yds, maybe a bit more, and with the accuracy of such a rifle, anything on down in size will not be an issue.  Obviously, the 7.62x39 has proven itself in self-defense/offensive combat roles, and since the PPC rounds are based on that case, accuracy for target shooting is covered too.

An added bonus is the availability of high capacity magazines for both the AR and the Mini formats.

Now, if it must be a "politically correct" rifle, then it'll be a Marlin 336 in 30/30, again for easy ammo availability, even though I'd prefer a .35 Remington personally.  Holds a decent amount of ammo in the mag, doesn't look "tactical" and it's easy to reload on fly without having to take the rifle out of battery, an advantage that mag fed rifles don't have.

I'd stick with a low powered scope, either a fixed 2.5x or 3x, or something that tops out at no more than 6x, or any of the rifles.  I'd probably drop the duplex for something with a dot reticle, or perhaps a heavy post, for fast instinctive shooting when needed.  The Trijicon 1.25-4x24 with the tritium post would be the ideal choice.  Good glass, no batteries needed, and a clearly defined aiming point in even the worst of light.

You know,  I approached this rom a rifle stand point, because that's my thing.  Now that you mention it, a short barreled 22"-23" 12 gauge pump or semi would probably be the best in versatility, from birds to bucks to bad guys.....if you toss in a rifled choke tube for the sabot slugs, it would be ideal, really.

Man, that wouldn't be any fun. But, to address the question, probably an 870 Remington in 12 guage as already stated. Rifle only, especially if I could reload for it, my old Western Field 30-06 built on a commercial Mauser 98 action. For that matter, any 30-06.

rifle only i would be looking at 30-06 or 30-30 and if i was thinking shotgun would be 870 or ithaca 37 or saiga s12 with drum mag for different ammo that would be only choice for semi auto shotgun.

There's always the Savage 24.

Personally I'd rather have a rifle, than any shotgun.

The rifle will work in many situations , better in some ! the shot gun will work in all but long range . best in some , good in others .
If you could only have one then it should work in the most cases . AND at all ages you may get to READ AS YOUR EYERS START TO FAIL , or medical conditions READ NOT AS STEADY AS YOU WERE AT 21 .
And consider if quail are the only thing to hunt , would the 3006 really work ?
Also many states limit or out law rifles these days .

and i like my rifles , BUT !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

God forbid that Americans would or could be limited to one gun.  But my choice would be an accurate .22 long rifle semi auto with a low power scope.  It, in most instances, would be adequate for home and civil defense, small game hunting, big game hunting with patience and time, extreme availability of ammo, and quiet.  That is the cartridge of choice.  An alternative to the semi auto would be a Savage 24 with the upper barrel in .22 and the lower barrel a 20 gauge.

Lots of farmers got by with one shot gun in the old days.

There is no way anyone could get by with just one anymore.

Just in case my wife is listening. ;)

Hunting with a shotgun, is like dating a fat chick.  It's a lot of fun, but you don't want your friends to see you.

One gun?  Remember the old saying we had in basic training......."This is my weapon, this is my gun, this is for killing, this is for fun!" ::) ::) ::)

One weapon only..........my choice would be a Remington 100 with a mod barrel.

P.S.  Fat girls need loving too!!!!!!! ;)

The only way I would be in such a sorry predicament would be if they came to confiscate my guns.  Yep, that .22 auto loader and 2 bricks of ammo is all I have (or need).

I have been kicking this idea around for some time. I myself would like to have one great rifle for Groundhogs and Deer. I think at least for myself and my needs that a Remington 700 chambered in a 260 or a 7MM-08 would be ideal. With either of these rifles you could pretty much hunt anything you like in the lower 48 states. Dale

i actually think it would make experts at that one gun out of a lotto guys who never really reach thier potential .. ive got an 336 thats primarily a back up ,for when the 06 savage 110 goes bad or something.. i also like just one rnd for that savage ..i concentrate on doing best i can with this one rifle and rnd..
the gun is dead on accurate with this rnd ,,but unfortunately my hand tremors wont be getting any better..someday  the 336 with red dot
scope will have to take over as num 1. gun..i sure am glad i got to experience the savages accuracy before i lose the ability to
shoot it right..id never have expected what the gun gave me,as to hitting exactly what i shot,, even if it might not be for so very long..
might not even be able now as when i found the right gun an rnd,,i made sure i knew what i could do an then put the gun and many rnds of fusion 165 up..
edit couldn t resist took my savage into the woods close to dusk..
set up an pb blaster can and walked until i thought the shot would be a challenge.. one shot and dirt flew up. i missed,dang..im walkin back and as im walkin up to it theres a clean hole right in the middle..now that made my day and is why i think a lot of us shoot.
nothin like it. :) :)

If only one gun, that would be very easy, A smooth bored, red dot sighted shotgun is the only choice. Hunt anything that walks flies or swims on the North American continent and you will be neither over or under gunned dependent on you ammunition chosen.

If only one gun, I think some type of bolt action with ghost ring sights and quick detachable scope, maybe one of those Brockman practical rifles or something like that, in .308.
