If only one gun, I think some type of bolt action with ghost ring sights and quick detachable scope, maybe one of those Brockman practical rifles or something like that, in .308.

Something like this?

My 870 12ga will do all I need.
Let's hope it never comes down only being able to have only one.

Obama would not want us to hve one gun, so I might as well keep all of them.  ;)

Somehow, I just KNEW that Swampman would be one of the first and that his choice would be the 700 .30-'06...

Honestly, that was pretty fun.  My choice at first thought was the 870 12 gauge with interchangeable chokes and a red dot site and iron sights.  Now I'm thinking that possibly (possibly, mind you) that a drilling might fill the bill better.  You can get a double barrel shotgun that will shoot slugs too as well as a decently accurate rifle.  Kind of expensive but maybe?  If not a drilling then definitely the 870 twelve gauge.  Critters big and small as well as two legged miscreants will all fall easily to the 12 if kept in range.  I almost went with the .22 bolt action.  It's a little light for most things but then again it's quiet and easy to get ammo for it.  Bad part is you can't reload.  It works for killing livestock for butchering.  Good for small game.  You CAN take deer and even hogs with it if you have to.  I definitely wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of two or three of those little slugs.  Probably not a one shot stopper but it's definitely better than thowing rocks (unless they are REALLY big rocks).

The shotgun was my clear choice but after wading through these post, the drilling is sounding better. I have one of these in the back part of the vault in a 12/.22 but I would opt for the .30/30 on the top.

I have to admit that you can't hardly beat the 870.  While the usefulness of a shotgun cannot be denied, I'd keep my 700 even if it meant I couldn't really hunt.  I just love looking at it and holding it.

Come on Swampie...  can't we get a 700 in 12 gauge smoothbore with interchangeable chokes?  Dang... I might be onto something there...  I know you'd buy one in a second...

It is the most popular shotgun ever made, with over 10 million sold.  Typical of Remington's products.

Savage 24V 12ga over 30-30. the 30-30 can be loaded with an accurate 100 gr sub load that is similar to a 22, and 130 gr spire points with good accuracy and respectable velocity, plus traditional 150s for big game. I had one and used to joke that I hoped my wife never found out that this one gun could do anything I ever needed a gun for.

Glad this is a theoretical question. Really would have to just have to choose just one. But probably a Ruger 10/22. Quiet enough, and can carry alot of ammo. Been told, really don't know this for a fact, but Velocitor ammo for a .22 can bring down a deer, with good shot placement.(head shot) Plus, extended mags give extra firepower. Don't think I'd have much confidence on human size targets past 100 yds., but would make somebody think twice about getting any closer.  gypsyman
