Wool clothing
« on: September 24, 2008, 07:19:53 AM »
Do any of you have any experience with wool clothing? Right now, beagle has my eye, but if there are others let me know. Right now I am using Columbia, but its bulkier and heavier than I like. Thanks.

I'm using the Columbia Gallatin Range stuff myself and actually like it.  However, I also have some Filson and Woolrich garments.  Any of the more costly stuff will provide better wind resistance than the Columbia.  Beagle is a little lighter than most of the others at 22 oz. compared to 27 oz. or even 30 oz.  The best stuff I've seen is from Gray Wolf Woolens.  Their 27 oz. 100% wool stuff is impervious to wind and weather, is custom designed for you, and the Predator camo is probably the most effective pattern available.

I also use both Columbia and Beagle. I like them both. The Columbia pattern is great for November when the the leaves are down.

I have Woolrich Bibs, that are a little lighter than the filson gear.  I got the Woolrich stuff from Cabelas for about $100 and I like the Filson coats with the wool vest liner.  The woolrich stuff I have had in cold weather and really cold weather.  I just had different long under wear on.   www.woolrich.com I think.  I'll try it and make sure.

I found the Columbia Gallatin Range stuff to be very uncomfortable.  I wear older military surplus, and Woolrich stuff with great sucess.

I like and use (1) Pendelton wool shirts; (2) Filson wool vest (26 oz); and (3) military surplus M-51 wool trousers.  I am sure there are other good wool shirts available, but Pendleton works for me.  I like the Filson wool vest a lot.  It provides a lot of warmth.  I like the M-51 wool trousers.  These wool trousers are comfortable over a pretty wide temperature range, in my experience.  I'm sure you can find other good wool trousers, but probably not at the price of the M-51s.

I love the M-51 wool shirts and have several.  Cheaper Than Dirt has some great foreign military trousers.  I bought 3 pairs that were grey wool with leg pockets for $11.95 they looked like new.
