.357 Herrett Scope advise
« on: September 26, 2008, 06:16:57 AM »
I purchase a barrel with brass but so for have not loaded for it just got the dies yesterday. Now the question. After reading about the heavy recoil with 180's and 200 grn. bullets what scope should I look at to put on top of this barrel. Hunting shots will be mostly 40 to50 yards with long shots out to about 150. Was thinking about 3 to 4x 20 ish obj.
Just not wanting to waste money on a scope that would not hold up for say 250 rounds in a season.
It's not the hunting or the finding it's about the time we spend with friends and the stories about what was.

I have a Thompson/Center 3-9X Recoil Proof handgun scope on mine in Conetrol bases/rings and it's held up well for me.  I put together this setup rather early in my handgun hunting career and, in retrospect, that magnification not only wasn't necessary but in certain situations a handicap.  I pretty much keep that scope set on 5X so I think a 4X or even a 2X fixed scope like one of the Leupolds would serve you well.

When I bought my first Contender (a .30 Herrett) in ~1975 I put a Leupold 2X EER scope on it with the old Conetrol rings.  No matter how tight I made the screws the scope slipped slightly in the rings at every shot.  I hated having to pull the scope back into position in all the time, and finally did what Milek and others at the time had to do - use an aluminum spacer tube between the scope turret and the front ring.  That was the only way to keep the scope secure.  Once I saw what JD Jones did with aluminum rings I tossed those poopy Conetrol rings and bases.  And for the hunting I did 2X was really not enough power either.

Since then I've used either Leupold 4X or Burris 2x7X handgun scopes on dozens of barrels with zero problems.  I use a Weaver base and three Leupold "rifleman" rings, and have never had a scope slip in them - up to a .45-70's recoil.

Thanks y'all,
Thats one of my concerns that if I went over 4x here with the heavy timber and everything that it would be to much on the 25 to 50 yard shots. a 2x7 looks good but sportsmans warehouse here is wanting 300+ for a Burris and i,ve never tried one of them on a hand gun. The only handgun scopes i've had were a 1.5 lobo and a 3x tasco target model. Just afraid of making a mistake and having to explain it to the wife i need another one.

Not that two scopes bothers me but!!!

I'd go with a Bushnell Trophy 2x6 'cause that is most of what I use save a Burris 10x on a 218 Bee.  Use the 6x power for load development and then crank it down to what's appropriate for what and where you are hunting.  Brand new they can be found for about $160 with a lifetime limited warranty for the original purchaser.

I've found the Bushnell "lifetime limited warranty" to be pretty limited and pretty worthless.  I broke a Bushnell Trophy 2-6X scope on a heavy recoiling handgun.  Bushnell would not honor their warranty saying the scope had been "abused."

If you shop with just a little care, a used Leupold fixed power handgun scope can be bought for even less money than $160 with the big difference being that Leupold actually honors their lifetime warranties even if you aren't the original purchaser.

I'd use a 4X Leupold, and an SSK ( has 6 screws) or Weaver type base with 3 Leupold Rifleman rings.

I've had good success with Bushnell 3200 scopes so far, but I've learned from their binoculars, that when a Bushnell product fails, you may as well throw it away, because their "Warranty" is a sham...there isn't one that they will honor.

Heavy recoil from the Herrett? Pardon me while I try to control the laughter.

OK laughter under control again, well almost. Anyone who thinks there is heavy recoil from the Herrett has very little experience with handguns in my opinion it's just quite mild and not at all heavy.

Scopes generally speaking do not fail from recoil but rather from incorrect mounting. If you do not use Burris Signature rings then learn to lap your rings and get the lapping bar to do it. Other wise expect ring marks on your scopes and potential early failure regardless of brand.

After trying many other brands of rings, Burris Signature Zee rings have proven themselves invaluable.  Wouldn't put anything else on my contenders.  Their gripping power is second to none without any marks or damage to the scope.

I have Burris 4X on my 15" 357 Herrett and have no complaints.  My shots with the Herrett range out to 200 yards and it does the job.

Did anyone anywhere say there was heavy recoil from a Herrett?  The gun that broke my Bushnell scope was a 460 S&W Magnum but then its recoil isn't all that bad either; certainly not enough to abuse a scope meant for handgun use.

I will jump on the Burris Signature rings bandwagon.  I was dissatisfied with all of my old rings and was not looking forward to lapping in all of the quality rings I had planned on buying to replace my junk.  The Burris Signature rings were just the ticket for a scope mount novice like myself.  Nothing could be simpler than their posi-lign system.  I chucked all of my old rings and got Signature rings for all my barrels.  You can get them for windage mounts, double dovetail mounts or get the Signature Zee rings that fit weaver rails if you want to double up on your rings.

for deer sized game i find the 4X works for me at moderate ranges that the herrett is useful for.

on my 357herrett i used 3 rings, although i dont personally find the recoil to be very objectionable on the 357herrett with 180/200 grain bullets...  i think my .44 mags recoil a tad more.

Yup the OP did. Here is his quote:

After reading about the heavy recoil with 180's and 200 grn. bullets what scope should I look at to put on top of this barrel.

Thanks for the advise seems most of the scopes would do as long as it is mounted properly. As for the recoil didn't seem that bad. This weekend was the first time I've tried anything over 160 in it. Wasn't as bad as the gold dot's in my 2 inch smith. Enough to get your attention but still enjoyed seeing the rams fall over.
