OT- Getting back in the Ten Ring
« on: September 26, 2008, 06:20:14 AM »
Had the cataract removed from my right eye yesterday.  Had a post-op check a little while ago and the Doc said "Perfect!" and took the right lens out of my glasses.  "You don't need that anymore". I got home, picked up the new 17 HMR and took a peek thru the scope.  WOW!!! I had to turn the focus half way back around and it was clear as a bell.  Now all the rifles have to come off the rack and be shot and re-focused.  Look out Mr. Whitetail, I can see ya now!
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

Congrats Pete, good for you!!  ;) I haven't dealt with that yet, but I have been dealing with a PVD, or posterior vitreous detachment for the last few weeks. Went to the eye doc immediately after having a lightning show in my right eye, was fearful of a detached retina, but all is ok, just a nuisance with a huge amoeba like floater in my shootin eye, I know what it's like to look upon the world with a very foggy view. :-\ Glad you got it taken care of, Fred M had his eyes done not all that long ago too. 8)

Thanks, Tim.  I hope you can do as well.  I looked at that eye chart machine this morning and said "Holy Smokes" and read the bottom line.  I'd love them to do the left eye, but they say the small cataract there isn't ready yet, so I'll have to wait.  I"m itching to get the Handis out and shoot them to see what has to be done with the scopes, but they won't let me for a few more days.

I asked that, he said my being near-sighted is the number one cause and there was no reason to think shooting caused it, the other reason is OLD AGE!! But the same symptoms can be seen from a detached retina(my concern)  which could possibly be attributed to head trauma/recoil, but recoil would have to be very severe....much more so than shooting with a leadsled, that's why I have it!  :D Tykempster is the one to be concerned about with his 45-120 NE. :o

Sometimes when the vitreous detaches it pulls the retina with it. He told me of a young patient of his that had just put her toddler down for a nap one friday afternoon when suddenly she had the light show in one eye. She waited until Monday to see him about it, it was too late, she lost the sight in that eye. :'(  Caught early a partially detached retina can be reattached, but not for her unfortunately.

Thanks for the concern tho, ;)

I made a date with the two in the middle on the bottom line.  I like tiny women. ;)

Tim, can they fix that, does it heal itself, or is it something you've got to live with??

Unfortunately it's something ya just gotta live with.... kinda like wimmin I guess!! There's some experimental laser treatments that are very risky, the problem is targeting the floater, it moves around and they have no way of pin pointing the laser to focus on it, and if a miss hits the retina!!! :o :'( It's gettin to the point now that I don't notice it as much, but it's always there, I'll find out how much it really bothers me when I go to the range next time. :-\

Sometimes becoming "more mature" sucks, but the alternative is much worse, so what the hey.  I've been told that being near-sighted, my vision will improve as I age.  At this rate I can throw the damn glasses away in another 139 years. :'(  Pete, yer lookin at my woman, knock it off. ;D   Glad to hear it worked for ya Pete.  Best of times hunting this season.  DP

Talk about "Best of hunting this season" (and thanks), my 'cros the road neighbor just pulled in with his 12 year old and a 10 point buck the kid got with a .308 just after 6 this evening in our 2 day youth season.  It is fantastic, and wonderful for dad and kid.  It's gonna be a tough act to follow!

Tim, I'm sorry to hear you have to tough it out.  I was thinking, since the Docs can't help, I thought we'd get together with a bunch of the guys and clean it up with some Hoppes, nail the floater down with JB Weld and take it out with a .17 HMR.  It shouldn't hurt much, cause we'd cover your nose with an old gun rag and the fumes would settle you down.

Tim, just want you to know you are cared about and appreciated......I wish I could offer something to help.

Pete

You send me some more 720 grain boolits and I'll load them up nice and hot.  We'll have you shoot them from the bench and see if we can't get that floater to either pop off or run away scared.  Just make sure your retina doesn't follow.

Watch out I shot the 45-120 off my lead sled and it flipped it over.  Some dents and scratches.  :-\
