T/C Service & custom trigger work
« on: September 26, 2008, 12:24:44 PM »
T/C would like me to return my 45-70 Katahdin ProHunter so that they can resolve an accuracy issue. However, I have had a $100+ trigger job done by the censored guy.

The trigger is perfect and I don't want it replaced by a factory trigger. Not sure what T/C would do if they inspected the trigger. Any advice before I send the rifle back?

What is the accuracy issue?  Can't you get by with just sending the barrel back?

I can tell you what they'll do with the trigger.  They'll bring it back to factory specs; i.e., you will no longer have a trigger job.

Grum is exactly right.   You send the frame back and you can count on that they WILL replace parts to negate the trigger job.

No advice can be offered on the accuracy issue you think you have since you are not sharing any of the particulars about it.

So IMO before I'd send anything back to TC I'd try to determine what the problem is.   Not that hard to do if you know much about TC's, will take the time and effort to do the drills yourself to eliminate one thing at a time.   If you still can't figure out yourself what the problem is, don't enlist help with it here and suspect it is not something you done did or didn't do, send the barrel only back.    If its the TC equipment itself causing the problem it's more likely the barrel than the frame.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I have occasionally posted problems getting this rifle to shoot. The very best group fired from this rifle was 2" @ 100yds. Many handloads shoot 2.5"-3.5" groups. I've used several different bullets and several different (appropriate) powders for the 45-70 without getting any better results. The rifle is all original except for the accurized trigger. I used a 9X scope for testing and used front & rear bags off of a concrete bench.

For whatever it's worth I can easily shoot .5moa groups from magnum bolt rifles on the same day. Recoil is not an issue.

I have talked with many other 45-70 T/C shooters who seem to have little trouble getting their Encores to shoot 1" groups with preferred loads.

After emailing T/C they suggested sending the rifle back for inspection, repair or replacement.

Is there any reason why I can't remove the trigger and send the rifle to them without it? I'm sure they have plenty of factory triggers laying around that they could use for testing the rifle.

Nope that ain't gonna fly with them. I suggest if you don't want it returned to original condition send barrel ONLY.

How about sending another factory trigger with the gun and leaving your custom trigger safe at home? Re-install when they return the gun to you.

That's a fine idea for anyone who happens to have a spare stock trigger assembly. Unfortunately, I only own one Encore and don't have a spare anything. ;D

More than likely the barrel is the problem. Send it back and you'll be shootin MOA before you know it.

Do you know anybody with an encore?  Put your barrel on the other frame.  If you have the same problem, the problem is the barrel.  If you do not have the problem, you will need to send the whole thing to T/C.  Did the problem show up before the trigger job or after?

T/C gave in to my complaint regarding the trigger and said to keep the receiver and just send the barrel back. It went out this morning. We'll see what happens.

I must have spent > $100 on bullets and powder trying to get that thing to shoot. I hope the new one is a bit easier.  ::) ;D ::)
