Beware atvtraderonline has 1/2 price quads
« on: August 04, 2003, 11:59:55 AM »
This web site is usually a good source for used quads. Lately there are several individuals that claim to be overseas selling quads for next to nothing. The word is getting around THERE ARE NO QUADS FOR SALE THIS CHEAP...My common sence helped me get through a deal last week. This giant Kawasaki was advertized for $3150. I wanted it bad. I have the hard earned cash. Just couldnt send it to him without the quad being in my posession. He only wanted half up front, nice of him I thought. You should have seen this web page someone had worked up to look like a DHL shipper. Missing a tracking # of course... He was upset when he realized there would be no payment till the quad arrived... Don't get caught in this scam. Most wouldnt but they are looking for the sucker/trusting soul. Rumor is there terrorists working to finance terrorism...Dallas...[/b]

thanks for the warning tip.  Have you been able to confirm that this is a scam?   Have you or anyone reported this to the proper authorities?  Not sure who exactly would be the proper authorities though.

It's certainly a scam and has been around for some time.  Another variant on the same theme is when you have something for sale and are contacted by a foreign buyer who wants to make the purchase.  They claim someone in the states owes them money and they will have them send you a cashiers check in excess of the amount of the purchase so that you can send them their purchase along with a check from you for the excess amount of money.  3 days later you find the cashiers check was fake and you lose all the way around.

I look at it like this; If you can't afford to lose the money, don't deal with people long distance that you don't know or can't confirm.

Don't know if this is a terrorist operation or just some other type of lowlife and it truely doesn't matter.  Any way you look at it unless you watch your Ps and Qs it could cost you.

it sounds like the typical Pigeon Dropping scam that has been around for years.  Seems like folks should realize that if a deal seems too good to be true, then it usually is.  THanks for the warning.

EBAY SCAM!
« Reply #4 on: August 07, 2003, 02:02:34 AM »
Well, I was emailing this guy about a quad that was priced so low it was
unreal!
Turns out it is unreal. He wanted me to wire the money through Western Union
to an address in Germany and also said to put as non personal goods to avoid
taxes. He said that it will ship via Fed-EX in 5 business days. He also
wouldn't take a credit card and he is supposedly a dealer. I
use a credit card for everything on eBay for my own protection unless I go
to the persons house to view it. Then of course I pay cash.
I've been talking to a woman who did get scammed out of 5000.00. Same deal
too!
Just be careful and if it sounds too good to be true..it is!

Greetings,
I'm a Deputy in WV. We are having this scam pulled on a lot of people here to the tune of couple thousand dollars each time. Its really sad. Many of the culprits are in Canada!!!! Those _ _ _ _ _ _!!!!! Please request the VIN of the ATV, a phone number of the person or business. If it's a business you can ask for the local police phone number, then call the local cops to see if the cycle business really exists. Pictures of a quad do NOT mean it's a real deal. A nice web page does NOT mean a deal is legit. I always tell them I'm local or have a local friend that wants to look at it in person. See what reaction they have to that proposal. Even this does not mean a real deal. Remember "If it's too good to be true, it's not true!!!"

I have a friend that purchase an ATV on Ebay and sent several thousand dollars to the seller and has never seen the ATV and can't find the seller. I tried to tell him if a deal looks to good it's probably a scam but his wife sent the money and now they are out the money and have no ATV.

:) Terrorists huh? They are going to have to sell a lot of 4 wheelers to buy Stingers. There are some of those snakes in this country that are stealing citizens hard earned cash via the internet but not as blantant. I really don't think that larceny is persued through extridition so this scam might be here to stay unless the countries collaborate.

A buddy of mine (who's a game warden, btw, so should know better) got taken on e-bay this way.  Thought he'd bought two quads for around $10,500, and never recieved the quads.

I'd have become suspicious when they wanted the money deposited to two different accounts...in two different countries.

Be careful out there!

Any time I deal with someone I don't do a face to face deal with I use the USPS and USPS money orders. If they don't come through the Feds get involved.  As you posted let common sense prevail.

Dave, don't rely on the Fed and postal inspectors too much.  I've heard horror stories even when sending USPS money orders. Unless its for a small amount of money or the person I'm dealing with is well known on a forum, I pass on the deal.

I will have to agree. I am a member on another forum. A bunch of guys have been taken by the same guy selling brass. I think they have found 30 or more fellows he has duped. Can't get the post masters to do anything. Last I heard they had tried feds and local leo where the guy lived as well and nothing was being done. I only buy on forums or ebay with a good list of positive reviews. Then do paypal so it is credit card fraud and a felony involved for piece of mind. I will have to admit I have shipped out many times on the same day for a trade. But wouldn't considder if their trade count didn't reflect an honest guy.

TribReady,  congratulations.  I won too!   Plus, there is a barrister, whatever that is, in England who wants to send money to me,because I am a long lost relative or something.

Last week I saved her Highness the Princess of the Republic of Upper Nigeriastanistan and the entire royal family just by giving them all of my personal information and bank account numbers so they could deposit their fortune in my account for safe-keeping... ;)

hunt-m-up.  that was a wonderful thing you did for the royal princess and her royal family.  Why I think that I have been inspired to contribute more to the people of haiti by giving a large % of my next paycheck to Cyrus Merle.  Cyrus is a cousin to the prime rib minister of haiti and is trying so hard to help his people that he was standing on the corner of interstate 45 and Greens road just the other day collecting cash in a little plastic bucket.  Can you imagine that dedication to his people, that he traveled all the way to Houston, Texas USA just to raise funds for the rescue effort!
