New-to-me Ruger #1
« on: September 26, 2008, 08:03:48 PM »
Sub-inch group shot with Ruger #1 30-06 @ 100 yards.  Round nose 180 grain moly coated over Varget.  Most groups larger.

A pic of the target, and none of your new gun ? ? ? What's up with that ? ?  :D

My -06 RSI does that regularly with factory ammo, so it must be in the breed.

Most #1's can do that, but not necessarily #1 shooters.  ;)

What model didja get - an "A" or a "B", or an "RSI" ?

Um yeah, that's the 1A....  Man I miss my 7x57.   :'(  MOA with the Remington 140gr load.  All I needed out to 300 yds.  Wish I still had it.  Sold it to help pay closing costs on my first house, years ago.  I don't have the house anymore either.  It got upgraded.  SIGH, the rifle never did.

I had my #1B rechambered to 30/06 A.I., but am still shooting the 180 grain Gamekings with a load of Varget and getting tiny groups. Great shooting rifles, at least the two that I have. Never have fired a factory load from either one...

Can't go wrong with the #1's.  Have 4 here and will definately add more.  I have a #1A in .30-06 I got for a really good price with full intentions of rechambering it to .300 H&H.  I'll shoot it first and if it groups well, I'll find another doner.
  Gotta ask though...camo scope on a classy #1?  ???

I also have a Ruger 30-06 RSI with a Williams Fool Proof peep mounted to the side of the receiver.  Had to have the holes drilled and tapped for it though.  I've not had a scope on this rifle as it appears to interfere with reloading with short eye relief.  Probably a long eye relief scope would work just as well, but with the peep sight mounted, it pulls up with the eye natural aligned with the center of the peep.  I've not done much bench testing with it, but plan to this winter with a Chrony chronograph and some hand loads.  I don't expect to see minute of angle with the peep site on it, but do expect it to shoot within 2-3" at 100 with it.  Hopefully a bit better, but my old eyes just aren't what they used to be.

That's a fairly decent piece of wood on that #1A, jcn59 !

So many were issued with stocks that looked like Skippy peanut butter, that I'd never buy one w/o holding it in my hands.

I've had quite a few #1's ( and #3's too), and all were very accurate w/o any "fiddling".
The only models (A/B/AB/H/S/RSI/V/etc) that I've never owned are the AB & the B - mostly because I never came across one at a decent price.

That's a nice looking setup, Greg.  How about a close up pic of that sight ?  What base did you use, and did you use the same front sight?

A 303-06 ?  Interesting.  How did you happen to come up with that?  Did the 06 chamber clean up with the .303 reamer or did you approach it a different way?  Does the .303 have a greater powder capacity?  Hmmmmm.....extractor rework too?

Oops an error again.  I'll take an Obama stance and say it was my myopia that missed the needed correction.  It is a standard 30-06 Springfield.  Yes, I did use the same front sight with the folding leaf.  Both are sighted in at 1 1/2" at 100 yards.  It is a Williams FoolProof sight that was intended for a Ruger M77 Mark I that I had a gunsmith drill and tap the reciever to fit it.   I installed a nylon sling to prevent movement when holding offhand, unlike heavier and wider slings.  Here are the pics of the peep sight, better wood than shown in previous pic, and the original sights.
