Second layer of clothing
« on: October 01, 2008, 01:16:42 AM »
I wear Under armor as my first layer of clothing while hunting. what do you guys reccomend as a good second layer? Something inbetween my U.A. and wool hunting suit. I am looking for something cheap, warm, odor reisistant(ruling out polypro) and very moisture wicking. Thanks!

The 100% merino wool Terramar Woolskins longs from Sierra Trading Post or Stanfields Superwash wool longs.

I wear surplus polypropelene as my second layer. Why did you rule it out if I could ask.

From what I have read, it obsorbs a lot of odor. And i guess once it stinks, the odor is hard to get rid of.

Depends on where I am hunting, how I am hunting, and what the weather is going to be like as to what I wear.  Usually its Kahaki's/ Brush pants and a warm shirt.  If I am going to be sitting in a stand I wear a pair of waxed Bibs.

I've used polypro for years and mine don't stink... when clean. ;) If wind is going to be a problem in cold weather I'd find something with windshear lining.

Thanks guys. Right now I think my set up is going to be Under Armor base layer, polypro or polyester fleece as a second layer, and columbia wool as my suit.

The are also three different weights of Comfortrel polyester longs by Wickers available from Sierra Trading Post.  These are very cost effective solutions for layering.

The Duofolds Originals are not good for active outdoor use as they have an inner layer of cotton.  Sweat drenched cotton is a killer at 20 below.  However, they offer a variety of synthetic products that work well.
Their new Varitherm 390 stuff is very nice.

Yeah, I definitely want to avoid anything cotton. I am thinking fleece over my under armour will do fine.

200 wt Pollar fleece if it is cold or windy. For me it is all about moisture mgt. I am an olympic class sweater even when standing still. Also consider a selection of wool sweatwers in different weights, I am a big fan of wool.

I'm a big fan of polartech fleece.  The polartec 300 is really great at keeping me warm.  I use it for layering and you cna find it in different thicknesses on cabelas.

The polartec thermal pro stuff is super warm for weight ratio.

I wear the endura skin from bass pro with the silver thread and I like it better than under armor. The scent control is awesome. Check it out, it is about half the price of the UA.

How warm does this stuff keep you? Is it comparable to the UA cold gear stuff? Thanks.

Terry,

The endura skin is made first for warm weather I believe. It makes a good base layer for me because it really wicks very well and drys super fast. I sweat in the coldest weather when I am walking or climbing so I love it. It is not as thick as the UA cold weather stuff so I doubt it insulates as well. However, if you are going to wear a heavier second layer than it's fine.
