Texas Contenders barrels; Has anyone used them?
« on: October 01, 2008, 03:27:23 AM »
I am seeing some new (at least to me) Contender barrels by "Texas Contenders".  Does anyone have any experience with this group or the barrels they "make"?
You should have said something; I didn't know I had struck a nerve.

I do not believe that Texas Contenders is still in business, but I could be wrong.  In the 1970s and maybe later, Frank Kendrick was a T/C distributor in Houston, TX.  Before T/C started offering carbine barrels he made custom barrels under the Texas Contender label.  He also made stock sets available (from Fajen and maybe others) and made up some complete guns.  The success of his Texas Contender operation was instrumental in convincing T/C to offer carbines.  I have one of his early, stepped light weight barrels in .256 mag and another regular contour in .223.  I have read some place that he used Wilson blanks.  Both are good, but the .223 is, for me, exceptional as regards accuracy.  A few years ago after obtaining the carbine in .223 I contacted him.  He said he was retired, or partially retired, perhaps.  In any case, I got the strong impression that he no longer made barrels.  I certainly would not hesitate to buy one of his barrels if it were in a caliber I wanted.

Hope this helps you.

I last bought barrels from Texas Contenders in the early 1980s.  I don't know when Frenk retired, but I haven't seen any new barrels from him in years.

texas-t/c...I have two of them, both were inherited and both shoot exceptionally well!!! 18" tapered in 22hornet which I have on a second edition t/c frame...and the second barrel is in 26" bull configuration was chambered in 30-30win but now is in 30/40 krag ackley improved, its on a first edition frame without any safety, and its a sweet rifle but I don't load too hot and the chamber pressures are kept down. I wood not ever get rid of them as I think they are not only irreplacible to me as inheritance...but they are some of the best shootin rifles I've known..I'd say if those texas t/c's are in the chambered in what you would like and funds are there.....get'em!!

Have a wonderful day! 1stshot...
