Omega and full 209?

Shot some buckhorn 209 today and got very good 2.5" 8 shot groups at 100 yds never any problems loading the 245gr spitfire barnes sabots. Used 100grs never tried anything else since all eight shots were inside 2.5". It had same POI height wise as my t7 but was about 2" right. After the 8 I moved 6 clicks LT shot 2 more dead center and called it good. It was very consistant. My question they only had fiocchi 209 primers at the gun shop and they worked and fit fine but when i shot they were much tighter coming out most I had to use my primer tool to get out. I have not use anything but t7 and t7 win primers in this omega and I could usually get them out with my fingers although one here and there I might need my tool. Do you think the extra power of the full strenth primer is the reason there tighter after shooting? Are you having same thing with say winchesters full strenth primers? Thanks

I think the problem is the shape of the 209 primers. Some have different shapes with can cause sticking.

Blackhorn 209 is a progressive powder, that will cause the primers to swell from the longer blowback pressure curve. With a fast burning powder like 777, the primer is less likely to swell. Not all primers are created equally, CCI's want to come unglued from BH209, the Federal 209A seems to be the hottest and stay together better than any other 209 in all of my rifles. Try some Fed 209A primers, might help.

Hey Coop, have you shot that same bullet out of the gun with T7?  If so, how did the groups compare to the BH group?

Yes I got good groups overall with the T7 as well just had to work hard swabbing between shots and if I didnt the group would open big time and be very hard to load the sabots. The only bullet the Omega didnt shoot well for me was the PB's (not that I have tried very bullet though). It shot the shockwave's well also. But I like the spitfires for pentration better.

ME...and experience. Black Mag'3 will do the same thing with the heavier bullets, also a progressive powder.

The quicker burning powders don't seem to cause the same problems because IMO the primer is still expelling gas. That has been my experience, and my OPINION. YMMV.

From my limited experiance with BH I would concurr with everything you have mentioned, only I would have added it is a smokeless progressive buring powder designed to be a Blach Powder substitute to volume and pressure curves.

As soon as you open a bottle of BH you get the aroma that tells you what kind of powder it is.... and if you a fighting T7 and can shoot 209's + afford the price of BH - it is a great powder.
