some prayers please...
« on: October 01, 2008, 06:16:33 PM »
Hi guys, I know this is not the correct place for this but I thought it would get more exposure here. If you can find it in your hearts to leave it here until this is resolved I would appreciate it.
The below guy, Ronnie Gray was (IS!!!) a great guy. I knew him on the State Police and he was always a real gentleman, ready and willing to help anyone that needed it. I just got this info which was posted on our retired State Police Network.
Anyone in the Idaho area, I would appreciate any info you may have on this as it goes on, and from others I would appreciate your prayers for Ronnie, that he comes through this OK. The guys on my old job are tough and he was no exception. The old expression is "Troopers ride alone" and Ronnie is riding alone now. I hope and pray they find him alive...Thanks guys...Andy....<><...:)

Retired state police captain missing in Idaho

By Kim Ring TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

A retired Massachusetts state police captain from North Brookfield has been missing for nearly two weeks in Idaho, where he went for a hunting trip.

The Idaho County Sheriff’s Department is searching a remote area in the northeast section of the state for Ronald Gray, a retired Massachusetts state police captain.

Chief Deputy John J. Nida said in a telephone interview this morning that search-and-rescue teams have been in the area for the last three days looking for the 62-year-old hunter, who failed to meet up with his party at camp.

The last contact with Mr. Gray was on Sept. 19 via radio, Deputy Nida said. At that time, he indicated he had injured his knee but believed he could make it back to camp. There is no cell phone service in the area where Mr. Gray was hunting elk.

Weather in the area has been unseasonably warm, Deputy Nida said, and Mr. Gray was properly equipped for conditions and has wilderness experience. He is familiar with the area, Deputy Nida said.

Mr. Gray worked for years with the state police dog section."

Andy. I hope him all the best but at this point I would think he had a heart attack or something else. I hope they find him alive but I really have my doughts. Hopes and prayers are with his family. Dale

I'll say one for Mr Gray tonight. He's got the weather on his side and knows the area. If his knees bad, he's doing the right thing buy staying put as his party knows he's out there. There is always hope. -gary

Police officers, especially seasoned ones, have a strong survival instinct.  The report indicates that he was prepared for the wilderness.  Two weeks is a long time and one cannot help to become discouraged, but I'm holding out optimism that he is hunkered down somewhere awaiting help.

Andy, I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but keep in mind LEO's seems to be at their best when their backs are to the wall.

Prayers to Capt. Gray and his family.

You're in the right place with the post.  There are a lot of good people here.  Most of us can't help with the search, but we can all pray.  That may be the best thing, and we're doing it.

Massachusetts man goes missing in Idaho

Associated Press - October 2, 2008 11:04 AM ET

GRANGEVILLE, Idaho (AP) - A 62-year-old Massachusetts man who went missing last month during a hunting trip in Idaho is the subject of a sheriff's posse search.

Ronald Gray, of Essex County, had been hunting with companions when he didn't arrive as expected at a meeting point in the Nez Perce National Forest on Sept. 23.

Idaho County Sheriff Larry Dasenbrock said the posse has been searching on the ground and by helicopter with the assistance of a private pilot and the Idaho Army National Guard.

Dasenbrock said Gray was in reasonably good health and has been in the area twice before, so he was somewhat familiar with the terrain.

The sheriff also said it appeared Gray had visited supply caches since he was reported missing.

Retired state police captain missing on hunting trip

By Kim Ring TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

NORTH BROOKFIELD— Those closest to retired state police Capt. Ronald S. Gray are hopeful that the man who survived a brutal attack in Vietnam will be found safe in the woods of northeast Idaho, where he vanished last month while hunting.

“If he’s just lost, he can fend for himself,” said retired state police Lt. Col. John Cunningham, who is Mr. Gray’s longtime friend. “But if he got injured ... I’m afraid that by this time, he could be running out of resources.”

Mr. Gray, 62, was on an elk hunting trip with at least one other person from his hometown of North Brookfield. When the trip was slated to end, Mr. Gray indicated he would stay on a few more days to hunt on his own. It was something he had done before because he was retired, North Brookfield Police Chief Aram Thomasian Jr. said.

But since Sept. 23, no one has seen or heard from him. Mr. Gray was supposed to meet up with others at Otter Butte in the Selway area of the NezPerce National Forest that day but he never arrived.

There have been unconfirmed reports of a radio transmission in which Mr. Gray said he had injured his knee and was trying to get back to camp, but it does not appear he ever returned. The date of the transmission is not clear. There is no cellular telephone service in the area, but Mr. Gray may have had more than one GPS unit with him.

He was reported missing Sept. 26 and was last known to be hunting in the Bitter Root Selway area from a remote camp on Mirror Lake Ridge.

The Idaho County Sheriff’s Department has been searching the area on the ground and from the air for five days. Hillcrest Aviation and the Idaho Army National Guard are assisting. The Sheriff’s Department Posse, a group of trained volunteers, is combing the area on foot, horseback and ATVs. About five searchers are on the ground and while that number seems small, it’s normal for a search in the area where the terrain changes drastically, Idaho County Chief Deputy John J. Nida said.

Some searchers are camped out in the area, tending a campfire all night in the hopes that Mr. Gray can find his way to them. Yesterday, a Black Hawkhelicopter was used in the effort.

While the search is extensive, covering about 5,200 square miles, some retired state police personnel who worked with Mr. Gray are having a hard time sitting at home waiting for word.

Retired Trooper Robert Benoit will fly to the area today. Mr. Cunningham is considering making the trip, as are other friends.

“The best-case scenario is that he’s out there having the time of his life,” Mr. Benoit said. “But it’s not good when you don’t communicate for so long, and he’s not the type who would create any cause for worry.”

Still, there is a chance that Mr. Gray isn’t missing at all.

“We spoke to the last person that saw him and he said, ‘Tell everybody not to worry about me. I’ll walk out when I’m ready,’ ” Deputy Nida said last night, adding that if Mr. Gray doesn’t know he’s the subject of a search, it will probably be harder to find him.

Both Mr. Benoit and Mr. Cunningham said they want to be close by to be sure Idaho officials have everything they need to find their friend and to offer any assistance they can.

A Massachusetts State Police spokesman said the department knows Mr. Gray very well and officials there are monitoring the situation.

Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray spoke with Idaho’s lieutenant governor to urge officials there to use all available resources to find Mr. Gray.

Deputy Nida said the county’s search teams have a 90 percent success rate and it’s been about two decades since someone was lost and never found in the wilderness there.

He said his department is aware of Mr. Gray’s extensive survival training and that there is evidence that someone has used food caches stashed in the area by hunters, though it’s unclear who might have done so.

But searchers are also worried because while he has equipment needed to build a fire, they have seen no signs of smoke, which they would expect Mr. Gray to use if he were trying to signal for help. Wildlife in the area includes grizzly bears that can weigh as much as 1,200 pounds, wolves and mountain lions.

Mr. Gray served in the Marine Corps and fought in Vietnam with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. The unit’s members were known for turning down Purple Heart medals and staying to fight alongside their comrades.

“They were known as the Walking Dead,” said Mr. Cummingham, who also served as a Marine.

“We rescue our own and that’s why we want to help. We know he’d do it for us.”

Mr. Gray also worked for the former Metropolitan District Commission police as a canine handler and joined the state police when the two departments merged in the early 1990s. Friends said his training with those departments would also help him if he is lost in the wilderness.

He is also a member of the North Brookfield Conservation Commission.

The area of the search is remote and the terrain rugged with steep mountains and deep draws but weather there has been “unseasonably warm,” which had aided in the search, Chief Deputy Nida said.

Thunderstorms are expected to move in today and tomorrow through overnight; temperatures are not expected to drop below 50 degrees.

Chief Deputy Nida said he has been fielding calls from Massachusetts and said one way people can help would be to make donations to fund the helicopter searches.

He expects to have more information on how that can be done today.

Doug, Thanks for that added info. If you or anyone else hears anything, especially anyone from the Idaho area since you may hear it first, I would appreciate you letting us know. I will contact "Iron Jack" Cunningham this weekend and see what arrangements are being made for a bunch of us (current & retired) Troopers to head out and assist in the search. Our guys have done this before when we have lost members due to different circumstances and hope we never stop doing it. We are a pretty close knit group. As an aside I was supposed to box "Iron Jack" in an exhibition boxing match for charity one time but it did not work out. Now I am glad It did not, Jack was a good, and much more experienced boxer, and a member of our boxing team....Hang in there Ronnie, we are all praying for you buddy....<><....:)

Here is a link to Terraserver centered on Otter Butte, Idaho.  Looking around the area I wasn't able to find Mirror Lake Ridge.  The terrain looks rough but there are campgrounds and other resources in the area.  The river looks like it would be a good barrier to keep him from wandering too far to the north or west.  Zoom in and look around, click to the aerial photo to view the terrain.  If you are using some other mapping software  Long. -115.18311  Lat. 46.03557

nothing yet Doug, I just got off the phone wht the Idaho County Sheriffs Dept. dispatcher about 15 minutes ago. I should be getting a call from the undersheriff about volunteers for the foot search in a while. I have contacted our Retired Trooper network (MSPNet) about efforts and/or volunteers or assistance. Now to sit by the phone, pray and perhaps make plans to head out there. I should know one way or the other this weekend. I just keep thinking of Ronnie out there alone and needing help. Left to his own and all things being equal, and even stacked against him, I would put my money on him to come out on top anytime. I am a bit worried about the knee injury and the time that has passed though. If anyone can come out of this OK Ronnie can. I do request the prayers continue. Thanks to you and everyone else for the concern and prayers...Andy....<><....:)

Retired State Police captain missing in Idaho wilderness
October 2, 2008 05:29 PM
By David Abel, Globe Staff

Thirteen days ago, despite nursing a bruised knee, retired State Police Captain Ronald S. Gray said goodbye to two hunting buddies, shouldered a 100-pound backpack, and disappeared into the Idaho woods.

The experienced outdoorsman from North Brookfield, who survived two tours in Vietnam, was supposed to return to their base camp by Sept. 23. He never showed.

A day later, the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho Army National Guard sent teams on horseback and helicopter to search the Nez Perce National Forest, a rugged mountain area spanning about 8,500 square miles. They have yet to find a trace of Gray.

“If he can survive the jungles of Vietnam, he can survive this,” his wife, Nancy Gray, said in a telephone interview today. “This was his third trip to Idaho. He knew the area as best as anyone can. I know he can find food. He’s eaten bugs and snakes before, so that’s not an issue. He knows what to do about water and shelter. We’re confident we’ll see him again.”

She thinks her husband may have misjudged the injury to his knee. His friends told her that he fell on a rock the day before he ventured off on his own to hunt for elk and deer. His knee was so swollen he skipped hunting for the day and soaked his knee in a cold stream.

“He thought he was fine,” she said.

Gray, 62, spent 26 years working for the state, first as an officer with the Metropolitan District Commission and then as a trooper with the State Police, after the agencies merged in 1992.

He worked in the canine unit with the MDC and then as a trooper Gray helped inspect other units to ensure they met state police standards, said David Procopio, a State Police spokesman.

Procopio said they have been in contact with Idaho authorities.

“We’re monitoring the situation,” Procopio said. “The Idaho authorities who know the terrain are best suited for this. We just hope he’s found safe.”

Idaho County Sheriff Deputy Chief John Nida said his officers would search for Gray “as long as weather and resources permit.”

He said Gray had a GPS unit, a solar-powered radio, warm clothing, and enough food and water to last more than a week. He added local outfitters have stashed caches of food and supplies throughout the area where he was hiking.

“He’s aware of where the caches are,” Nida said.

He said the temperature in the area has been in the mid-80s over the past week. But the temperature is expected to drop this weekend and the first snows could appear soon.

Gray also may have to contend with grizzly bears, mountain lions, and wolves, but Nida said that in his 27 years working in the area, he has never heard of anyone attacked by such animals that inhabit the area. And, if needed, he has protection. Gray was carrying a Remington 270-bolt action rifle and a gut knife.

Nida said the county’s search teams have a 90 percent success rate. He added it has been about two decades since the county failed to track down someone lost in the woods.

“We’re treating him as though he’s lost and needing assistance to get out,” Nida said. “We’re confident that this will have a happy outcome. We know he is a very determined and tough individual.”

NORTH BROOKFIELD— Searchers in Idaho have found a backpack containing personal items belonging to missing retired state police Capt. Ronald S. Gray, who hasn’t been heard from since Sept. 19 when two fellow hunters returned home.

The backpack was found Thursday near Highline Lake at about 5,000 feet, Idaho County Chief Deputy Sheriff John J. Nida said last night. Searchers found the items at a campsite where a tent had been set out by paid guides known as outfitters. Inside were journals detailing the gear Mr. Gray was carrying and personal items such as vitamins and a bankbook . There were no notes or other indications that he is aware of the search or in need of help.

The pack may have been left behind because Mr. Gray planned to return to the area, Deputy Sheriff Nida said. Hunters who are flocking to the area by the dozens for general hunting season this weekend were told of the search and are looking out for Mr. Gray. Searchers are hoping he may walk out of the rugged area on his own when the weather turns this weekend. Snow could hit the NezPerce National Forest today.

A clearer timeline of Mr. Gray’s trip has also been determined. He and two friends went into the NezPerce Sept. 14 to hunt elk. The trip was set to end on Sept. 19, but Mr. Gray, as he has done before, opted to stay on and hunt for a few more days. He was slated to meet up with an outfitter Sept. 23 at Otter Butte, but never arrived.

Searches began the following day and have continued since, Deputy Sheriff Nida said. Some searches have focused on the Jim Creek area, where Mr. Gray had indicated he may go fishing. He had fishing and hunting gear with him, Deputy Sheriff Nida said.

The Idaho County Sheriff’s Posse has been assisted by the Army National Guard and Hillcrest Aviation Co., both of which have been flying over the area.

Many people have asked if they can offer assistance, and Deputy Sheriff Nida said funding is needed for the search. Donations can be sent to the Idaho County Sheriff’s Posse, 320 West Main St., Grangeville, ID 83530. The checks should specify that the funds are for the posse and the search for Mr. Gray.

Donations to pay for helicopter time can be sent to Hillcrest Aircraft Co., P.O. Box 504, Lewiston, ID 83501. The company’s vice president, Keith A. White, said one hour of helicopter search time costs $890. He asked that donations be noted as being for the Ronald Gray search.
