Question on the thompson TCR 83 and 87
« on: October 03, 2008, 01:30:23 PM »
In looking through a gun traders guide today I came across a Thompson TCR 83 and 87 rifle.
Looks rather different and was wondering if any of you fellows have one or ever seen one and your opinion on this rifle. book says that they were made up till about 93. Might be nice to add to my gun collection.

I have a  TCR 83 with five barrels. In the T/C big fire in 1997 the TCR tooling burned up. There was about 14,000 made. T/C did not replace the tooling because the TCR had to much hand fitting and the Encore was on the way. The TCR looks great but prices has jumb up for them. I have seen prices out of reason for a complete gun. No one make's the barrels now. The custom maker Vrigin Valley made some barrels. They had problems with the forends fittings. I have seen prices for a used gun run around $450 to $650. Hope this helps.

I had one of each years ago, and several barrels.   They were fun to use and pretty well made, but they do not come available for sale very often.    As tlyne suggested prices are high to ridiculous now.   Know a couple of gents who have been trying to complete their collection of them for many years (all barrels/configs) and probably never will get it done.   Most folks who have them tend to hang on to them.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Ladobe is right about ridiculous, One of the  big Tulsa Gun shows a table had a nice looking TCR 83 with a 6.5x55 barrel for $1,400. Now that is ridiculous. The Encore is a better buy with a good choice of available barrels.

I just picked up a TCR 87 with a 30-06 barrel with base and rings for $499.
A barrel, forend, and rings & bases for my encore would have been close to $400.
So I'll give it a try.  Really would love to get a slug barrel for it...my search begins.
