SD/HD Loads for .45 LC with 250g Speer GDHP
« on: October 04, 2008, 08:12:39 AM »
Am shooting S&W Mountain Gun 625-7, 4" bbl. Looking for Win231 or Unique load that approximates the 900fps advertised for factory Speer 250g GDHP load. My guns shoot those great, but I have a couple of hundred bullets available & plenty of cases & powder, and it's cheaper than factory--at least for practice.
Thanks in advance.

Hodgdon's web site stops at 7.3gr of 231 for 797fps and a 250XTP. This load is listed for Colt pressures. If you look at the Ruger/TC lists, they don't have 231 listed. I've been using the older hardback manual for my Ruger loads. They have loads listed that aren't on their website.

Is your 45 rated for higher pressures? If so, give Hodgdon a call. Their techs have proven to be a wealth of info over the years for me.

I would start with 7.3 grains of Unique , that should give you around 800 fps and work up from there . Alliant lists a MAX load @ 7.8 grains for 840 fps with this bullet / powder combo .

My two LCs like 8.0 grains of Unique.  I started at 7.0 and worked up .2 increments.  I am using Winchester brass which is supposed to be about the thinnest.

Good Luck, but work up to your loads.
