caliber change
« on: October 04, 2008, 09:54:12 AM »
I have a Remington 700 Bdl in 22-250 that is some barrel damage and I was think of a caliber change.  In addition to a nice after market barrel would the chamber length and bolt accomidate a 6.2x39?  If the change is possible what twist rate and barrel length would be paropriate? Thanks guys, Gary

At first blush I do not see why that conversion would not work with the bolt and overall case length.  The case head on the 22-250 measures .473, just about what a 45 acp case head measures (same for 06, 308, etc) and the 22-250 seems to sport a semi-rim or a rim slightly larger than the case body at its base. The 39mm Russian case appears to have a case head either the same size or a hair smaller than the 45.  I couldn't mic the case head on one of my 7.62x39mm cases cuz the battery in my micrometer went dead in the cold...............

The length of the 22-250 is 1.912", the case length of the 39mm case is 1.535", so the conversion just might work.  HTH and good luck.  Let us know how it goes.  Mikey.

Thanks for your thoughts Mikey.  I will sit down with my gun smith and see what my options and costs should be.  Gary

Rim size is smaller with the 7.62x39 (.447) case head about same size as the ppc you have to install a sako extractor also don't think you could get that case to feed from the magazine.  Gunmsith buy the name of Mike Bryant got the Br case to feed from a 700 magazine.  I did one afew years ago on a Rem action it had been chamber for the 6ppc so the extractor work was done and it had a single shoot follower so I had a 1/18 twist barrel installed for the BIB 30 cal 112gr bullets after about 100rd sold the barrel when back to the 6ppc.   If you could find one of those old mini mauser in 7.62x39 or any bolt action rifle set up for that caliber be dollars ahead using those rifles IMHO.  You have to be careful on some conversion that the parts you are working on may not work again if wanting to go back to a standard caliber so you would have to factor in those replacement cost.  Well good luck

gulfdaddy:  Hey, I just thought of something - if you can get a gunsmith to fit another bolt to your current rifle (maybe all you need is the bolt body with extractor) you should be able to go with whatever conversion caliber you want.  I'm sure the 700 was made for rimmed as well as rimless calibers.  I would call your gunsmith or call/e-mail Remington and see what they have to say.
HTH.  Mikey.
