caliber change questions
« on: October 04, 2008, 03:15:33 PM »
I have a line on a Rem. 700 BDL in 22-250 that could use a new barrel.  I am interested in building a light recoiling rifle for small Texas hill-country whitetail in 7.62x39.  I know CZ makes a nice carbine in this caliber but I would like a different configuration.  Does anyone know if this short action remington will accomidate this caliber...what will the bolt need done...and what twist rate and  barrel length would be most useful?  Any directions in this area are appreciated.  Thanks, Gary

Just a thought for you.
The 7.62x39 case head is smaller than the 22-250
You could rebarrel to 30 cal and chamber it for 300 savage or 308 winchester and load them down a tad if you reload and you will have a wide selection of bullets you can use ,and even factory loads you would have a good selection in 308 winchester Plus you woould not need to have bolt work done.as I AM NOT A GUNSMITH just an idea for you.

If you want to do this without having to bush the bolt face and install a sako extractor, get yourself one of the actions they made for 6.8 SPC. All it takes is a light pass with a boring bar to open up the bolt face enough to work with the 7.62X39 case, and the factory extractor will work.
I have built a couple 700s in PPC and 6.5 Grendel using these actions, and it does work very well. Feeding with the PPC case is pretty good, but the 7.62X39 would probably not be too slick due to the body taper. A single shot follower would be the best bet there.
All in all, the CZ would be a better way to go if you wanted a 7.62X39 repeater.

You got some kind of craving to shoot surplus ammo (as in "cheap, cheap, cheap?" --I have that problem myself) or you want a light, unusual rifle easy as possible? Otherwise, re barrel to a member of the .22/250 family. That .250 Savage is hard to beat for accuracy and soft recoil.

OR   ...The 7.62 x 39 has a case capacity approximately that of the .30/30 WCF. Works at higher pressures... Etc. Point, the .225 winchester case is the old .30/30, almost, with a rim for the .473 bolt face a .22/250 uses. This gives you all the old .30/30 Imp cartridges and feeding thru a bolt action. .219 Zipper. Zipper Improved. .219 Don Wasp. 6mm Wasp. .25/35. 7 Waters. .30/30 Imp.  You just have to "make" the case with the .225 Brass. And in a bolt action, accuracy...

You might find a bolt for the 6.8 that would fit your gun. Then you got the magazine to rework. Always something, but if you are having fun. LUCK.
