Which model ?
« on: October 05, 2008, 02:15:59 AM »
Im going to call Savage tomorrow to try and determine which model I need. The question that I have from here is (im afraid Savage might be too bias on this question) can I expect the cheaper combo/package models and the ones with the lighter barrels to shoot almost as accurately as the other higher priced models when it comes down to hunting situations of 150 yards or less ?  Im not going to be doing a lot of target shooting or any competition.

I have several models of the savage line in my safe and everyone of them are shooters. The quailty of the barrels does not change on any model. I shoot alot and my friend is a gunsmith and has a range and Iwill put any savage against another rifle out there. I have a plain model 110 in a 300 win mag. With this rifle I made a shot at 430 yards and took my biggest buck to date with it. I have other makes of rifles but I love my Savages. Dont worry about cost just put a good scope on it and shoot it.

Generally hunting weight barrels (think skinny) can shoot just as accurately as heavy barrels. The advantage of a heavy barrel is it takes more shots to heat it up and it reduces recoil. A skinny barrel that is properly made will not walk their shots. This is due to stresses built up in the barrel and they change as they heat up. A good barrel will not change due to heat. I have found that many times a fully floated hunting weight barrel will not shoot as well as one that is fully floated and has some up pressure at the end of the stock, but not always. Plastic stocked guns are a little more tricky getting some up pressure at the end of the fore end, because they are hollowed out in the fore arm region, but it can be done. I would not even think about a heavy gun if I was going to carry it more than a few hundred yards at a time.

Just pick out the one that you like and go from there. Even the cheapie models shoot. With the exception of my 12FV heavy barrel, my Savage 11 combo (pre accutrigger) is probably the most accurate one I own and it seems to be indifferent to the load it is fed. The Stevens 200 is highly regarded in the accuracy department and it is the cheapest model in the Savage line up.
