Personally I think the Russians should carpet bomb all the Somali cities that support piracy. Then have commandos go in and take the ship. Take any surviving pirates aboard a Russian ship, try them, then take them ashore and execute them on the spot. If it happens again do the same thing all over. Soon there would not be any Somalis left to be pirates, or the people on shore would put a stop to it.

With all the non interventionism popularity currently in the US and with the diplomatic philosophy of Obama and liberals, it appears that the US will do nothing. Somewhere in history, I remember something about the Shores of Tripoli. I also remember something about US policy that ransom will not be paid in kidnapping cases or piracy. Stalemate.

Saw pics on tv, those pirate boats are small. Why aren't these ships armed??? International maritime law or something??? Even a couple of m14s on a ship could keep them at bay, even sink them. No quarter should be given these scum. I doubt the Russians will be very nice when they get there. POWDERMAN.

Would it not be more apropo, since they ARE PIRATES, to either "shiver their timbers" (what ever that means) or make them "walk the plank"? I mean they are pirates, and pirates should not be taken out and shot like ordinary criminals. Their pirates for gosh sakes. How about a little respect for the image. JMO

Send a SEAL team in at night, a bunch of well placed bags of C-4 with timers. No more ship, no more tanks and ammo and no more Pirates. End of story.

Until the recent exposure of such incidents, this simple old country boy automatically figured that ALL ships had weapons enough to
defend itself from just such an attack..some rifles, a couple 50 cals and perhaps a recoiless rifle or two.

What am I missing? Why do "authorities" seem so baffled? If I am a ship's captain and a small speedboat approaches me on the open
sea filled with several men, my weapons should already in "lock and load' condition and manned.
One recoiless rifle round or one RPG should settle the matter of the pirate's boat..no way am I going to allow a batch of weapons carrying scum
scale the 20-30 feet up the side of my ship, even a Mossberg 500 would stop that in short order. For legal reasons, any ship has the capability
of "recording the transaction".
Heavens to Betsy! Those ships went "dead in the water" at the pirate's request..why ? No logical excuse as I see it !

hmmm... my first reply to this didn't show up.

first - you have to deal with the current ones that are holding hostages. You have to wait them out. After a while when they are tired, hungry, fighting amongst themselves etc, then we can send in the SEALS.

second - Q Boats like in WWII seem to be a good answer. Armed decoys with the express intent of luring them in and blowing them out of the water. Don't pick up survivors either.

Third - Greed has does have something to do with it. Greedy damned pirates that want to commit crimes to fund a lifestyle instead of working for it. It's not our fault that these idiots do this stuff. That's like blaming women for getting raped. "Well if you didn't dress like that it wouldn't happen...". What world do you live in? Obviously, people in your world are not responsible for their own actions. Someone else is to blame... the criminal is the victim right?

DEE. I believe keelhauling would be appropriate. Stripped naked and drug UNDERNEATH the ship from one side to the other, all of the barnacles would strip the hide right off ya. A modern ship is much wider than the old pirate ships. POWDERMAN.

Well powderman, I suppose that is an option although, I have heard a lot more concerning, shivering timbers, blowing men down, and walking the plank. I was just trying to stay with the pirate theme. For those less guilty, I suppose we could take their parrot, or eye patch, or even their peg leg. We could also censor them from saying "yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum, and perhaps even "confiscate their rum", until the matter is resolved. You know, kinda like sanctions?

On the more serious side, I would wonder where these Russian tanks and this large amount of ammo were going in the first place? Were they (the tanks and ammo) headed to a country where they would benefit the population or suppress the population? I have not in many years heard of the Russians doing much for humanitarian causes.

When I first heard of this news I found it laughable. Being young and living no where the sea I thought pirates were part of history. I did not know they still existed. Upon research I found that not only do they exist, but they are nothing like the pirate shows demonstrate. They are as ruthless and cut throat as depicted, but they are WAY more sophisticated.

I have a feeling that the Russians when confronted with a situation
like this do not practice all the social correctness that the U.S. Gov. does.
Those arms and tanks could have been going to south America.

Yes sir. That is my point. Where were these now delayed arms going in the first place. There has been much bluster and bravado, as to the solution of dealing with pirates, but alas, the pirates may be doing someone a huge favor that is actually on the right side of things. That little detail has been skiped over, during the chest pounding.

From what I have read, the weapons were on their way to Kenya then on to Southern Sudan. Southern Sudan is not on the restricted list, they are separating from northern Sudan where all the genocide is taking place. I don't know this for fact, just what I read on the net.

Now it seems someone in shipping tipped the Pirates off as to what the load was. This ship was targeted because of it's cargo.

But I feel the Russians will do something fast. They don't care what the rest of the world thinks. Like when Pakistanis started kidnapping foreigner's they kidnapped a Russian diplomat. The next day seven dead Pakistanis kidnappers were found with their privates removed. They would not enjoy the virgins. No more Russians were kidnapped.

It is hard to believe in today's world any country would ship arms and
ammo without the ship being armed or escorted. I don't think Russia will
negotiate much longer than it takes to say unhand that vessel. The
Somalis may get a lesson.

   If you were at all serious, you are actually saying that if someone has wealth, it is acceptable to rob, torture and murder to take it away.

   That wealth in many cases,may be collective wealth earned by the sweat of the brows of thousands of people.. The pirates may have had opportunities to EARN a living honestly, but eschewed the opportunity..preferring crime instead.

   I see crime perpetrated here in the states and most often it is by someone who is simply TOO LAZY to earn their own keep. The same place where robberies occur often have "help wanted" signs in the windows of fast food places in that same neighborhood. If one job doesn't get it..they should take two.. I have done that before, and if it is good enough for me and many others I have known..it's good enough for Mr Crook !
