S&W 9mm Compact vs Springfield XD / XDM
« on: October 05, 2008, 04:32:09 PM »
I wasn't familiar with the S&W 9mm Compact until this past week.  A friend of mine showed me one online and I went in and picked one up at my local gun store (not purchased one...just picked it up :) ).  I really like the feel of it and it looked like it could be customized with back straps, etc.  Very nice looking gun.  Just wondered how many people owned one and how you think it compares to the XD / XDM's.  Does the S&W have a match grade barrel?

I'm looking at trading in my XD9 in soon for the XDM9 but the S&W really caught my eye.  I assume it's pretty comparable to the Glocks and XD's.

Glock, XD, S&W, they're all the same, point down range, pull trigger and BANG.  All are quality makers with S&W probably having the better CS after the sale.  I've owned several small S&W auto's and liked them all.  Currently, I shoot a XD Tactical.  The new XDM has a match grade barrel, but I doubt any of the shelf S&W auto's have such a barrel.  Now you could save and save for a Performance Center S&W 952 which is a top of the line shooter.  I have one and you cannot compare it to a stock everyday handgun.  Why are you trading away your current XD for a new XDM?  As far as S&W backstraps, just the M&P can be changed, not the other models.

A friend of mine carries one every day in 40 in his gun shop.  I shot it a few times and like the little gun.  It reminds me of my P230 sig.  Recoil is very mild and the gun also fits me and points where I point it.  The Glocks do not for me.  Not slamming the glocks,  The just don't aim where I point them.  I have to curl my hand down to hit anything other than sky.

Why are you trading away your current XD for a new XDM?

Because the XDM's are the new and improved XD.  I like the match grade barrel and interchangeable backstraps...also the new sites.  Plus, I'm going to trade out my 3" XD subcompact and get the XDM 4".  I've since purchased a Springfield EMP as my main carry gun so I don't carry the XD anymore.

Any advise on bullet selection/ reloading info for the S&W M&P9?  Looking at 115 gr. Hornady XTP or Sierra 115 JHP, I am wanting to work up some accurate home defense loads.

I would definitely think twice before reloading any ammunition that is going to be used for self / home defense.  Search the forums here and you'll find quite a bit about it.  You can cause yourself many more legal issues if you ever had to use it.  Imagine the prosecutor explaining to the jury that you worked on a special "recipe" designed to KILL someone!  Not a headache you'll need at the time.  I would go with a good Federal Premium load or something similar.

I have a MP 9c, a full sized MP40, and a MP 9Pro. All great pistols that are very accurate with perfect ergonomics. The MP 9 Pro is dead on accurate and has become my favorite range pistol. I'm not sure about the match grade barrel but this pistol is partially built by the Performance Center. Check it out here; http://www.smith-wesson.com/wcsstore/SmWesson/upload/other/ps/M&P9_ProSeries.pdf
I don't own a XD, since my 1st quality auto pistol was a S & W, I've kinda stuck with them. If, and when, I ever buy another auto pistol (odds are, I probably will) I might consider a S.A. XD-M.

You won't go wrong with the XDM's.  I traded my XD sc in for a 4.5" XDM 9mm.  It is an excellent performing gun.  You may find yourself a new favorite range gun.  ;)  The 4.5" match grade barrel really hones in after a couple hundred rounds through it.  I've been extremely happy with it.
