Going to start on coyotes Thursday
« on: October 06, 2008, 12:25:18 PM »
I have a guy coming for instruction so I'm going to start setting for coyotes Thursday. My goal is to get 30 sets made the first day.I'm running through some country that I have never trapped before.I should have about 70 miles of the line covered,if,if if......It rained here on and off for 24 hours. That will be good as the guy will be able to see fresh sign at locations. It looks like coyote family units are still intact.I haven't been this excited about trapping in a long time.Of course there is the prediction of an early snow at the end of the week.Bring it on,a trapper will survive!!!! Tight chains guys!!
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

I set for 2 long days.It started raining 2 hours ago.Was going to check tomorrow. This will be interesting.Last evening waterfowl started pouring out of Canada. The lake and fields by my house were covered with Sandhill cranes, geese and ducks today. Some nasty weather is coming. That ought to move some fur.

We've had 9 to 10 inches of wet heavy snow on the ground since the night of the 10th.It has almost all melted off. It's a sea of mud, gumbo mud.I can't get around the line without tearing up the trails. If it refreezes tonight I'll run around to all my sets.I'll snap everything then reset on my next set of days off.I'm going to have some interesting mudball coyotes and fox to skin.

Isnt that about parr for the course, do all the leg and back work setting traps and it rains and snows... sounds like Wisconsin..  oh forgot and freezes...LOL... i learnedmanyyearsago  to antifreeze traps from day one as  if you dont you are taking up traps and freeze proofing them while resetting.... Good luck on your line yotero!

It's 61 degrees today and drying out.I had some off the sorriest looking coyotes in traps last night I've ever seen.I hooked up an old wahing machine in the garage to try to wash out the gumbo mud now That I have then skinned.Yuk.Rdfx the coal shale bedding worked pretty good. Not as good as waxed dirt though.

Never used coal shale, know off some O'Gorman students bringing truck loads back east.  Ive got about 200 gallons of waxed dirt ready to go.  I also picked up another wringer washer for washing muddy critters. Got two now,  one for parts , both work.

Thats the beauty of staying with beaver and rats---very few mudballs to deal with, one every once in a while--but not very often.

Coal shale works pretty good, better than dry dirt. It's oily and repels some water. If you get snow, not rain traps will fire through it.I'm just cherry picking locations, jusy setting the "hot spot's".I just had some pheasant hunters leave. They wanted Montana coyotes to take home and have tanned.Something to remember their hunt.I sold 7 skinned, fleshed, washed dried and stretched for $50.00 apiece.I left the whole lower jaw(piece of fur) and the paws on these.
One thing about coal shale is if it gets real wet or you make a catch then it gets wet you have a nasty mess. The blackest pale coyote you've ever seen.
My girlfriend arrives for 10 days tommorow. She will ride along with me.I'm going to try to talk her in to learning how to skin and flesh. She gets to pick out the coyotes she wants to have a comforter made.
I had an old male coyote this morning.I checked a short line on the way home from work. When i peeled him he had old porcupine quills around his muzzle.
