Looked at a model 99, Help
« on: October 07, 2008, 08:46:26 AM »
I have looked at model 99 savages before but not much.  My knowledge on the topic near zero but...  I found a model 99 that friend purchsed.  He wanted the near new lyman alaskan scope and the griffith and howe, spelling?  dovetail quick detach mount.  The gun is a snoble fore end checkered, pistol grip buttstock, checkered, tapered barrel in 300 savage .  It is also a take down model.  The wood and blue are in very good condition like ,90% plus blue.  The stock is nice with a few honest wear/ hunting marks but really nice.  The wood does have quick detatch sling swivles of a type I have never seen.  A 1/2" hole drilled in the stock and a metal insert screwed in making a metal sidewalled well with a lip.  To put on or take off the  sling you depress the button on the sling swivel and three ball bearing become loose, release button they pop out and sling is secure.  I don't believe they are original but seem old as does the sling.  The scope mount means the side of the reciver is drilled and taped, but the top of reciever is not, sling means holes in the stock that are not original, and large and slighly off center. The gun is also missing the buttplte and a old red recoil pad lives there now.  These would seem to lower the overall value of a nice take down in 90% original finish with mirror bore and little to no wear, no stock cracks or sign of abuse or neglect.  So what is a fair offer for the gun?  I am guessing its a 1500. gun before deductions, just a guess, but how much does one reduce?  This is not a piss off a friend deal, I simply have first option to buy.  He is a dealer and will price it at close to market value, thats my guess.  Any help would be deeply appreciated.   Sorry for not having the serial number.   Sharps-Nut

[ He wanted the near new lyman alaskan scope and the griffith and howe, spelling? ]

If he plans on keeping the scope/mount, and sell the gun w/o it, then IMHO it's a $400 rifle - no more, no less.

I sold one just like it (Weaver mounts, though), walking around a gun show about a year ago, for $400 w/scope - and profited on it.

In my experience, only a 99% specimen would command over $1K - and some certainly do have very high price tags indeed ($2K-$3K), but they're also always for sale, almost never actually bringing the asking $$.

Thanks, this is what I needed to hear.   I really like the old gun but that drilled and taped reciever side has to kill its value.   It is a really clean old gun and my 90% might be harsh but you cant finx the drill and tap.   Did not want to get over exieted and pay to much.  They are sure proud of them on acion arms, gun broker ect.   But they may never sell either.   Thanks again SN

Agree with the others, the "custom work" reduces its value. It's a $400.00 gun, exactly what I paid for my Savage 99 EG in .300 Savage.
