14 Yr. Old 1st Muley
« on: October 08, 2008, 11:04:14 AM »
Here is my 14 year old's description of his Mule Deer hunt.

"Saturday morning my dad and I got up at 5:00 so we could go mule deer hunting. It was a longer drive for the deer than the antelope. Both of us had binoculars and my dad had a spotting scope on the window. The place where we hunted had roads where we could drive and then look for deer. We saw a small buck first, but I didn’t want to shoot one that small. After a lot of looking we found a group that had two bucks bigger than the little one. I decided, I wanted to kill the biggest one and we made a stalk, but a doe saw us and they moved away before I could make a shot. I also got lots of cactus in my leg. Also, never wear tennis shoes while hunting! We followed this group and tried several times, but every time something happened and they spooked. We continued looking but didn’t see any more bucks and then went into town for lunch. We went back out in the afternoon and kept looking but all we saw were antelope, coyotes and does. Late in the afternoon we found the group that had the two bucks in it again. I was able to set up and make a shot on the smaller one. It was almost too dark to see when I shot. I was really excited about getting two bucks in two days."

MOA Maximum.  Rich Mertz, Sundance, WY makes these handguns.  Here is his website:

http://www.moaguns.com/index.html
Then click on "Pictures of MOA's 2007 Cold Turkey Shoot"  then the LR & Bench, Hunting pictures and both the the 1,000 yard Cold Turkey shoot pic.

You will see an assortment of MOA's

Cartridges I have used in my MOA's:
22-250AI, 6mm-6.5x47 Lapua, 260 Remington, 6.5-284, and 7mm Remington Magnum Improved.
They are stronger than a XP action, easily interchange barrels, free-floated, adjustable trigger.
We have shot them beyond 1,000 yards.

The handgun set-up my son used for his antelope and muley made this nice three-shot group @ 500 yards (1.25 inches) a couple of weeks ago when I was checking drops at longer ranges:

xphunter, you stated that the MOA was stronger than an XP.  Is that indeed the case?

I've been sorta keeping my eye out for an XP, but have been seriously considering the MOA instead.  I like the looks of the MOA a bit better, plus it's more compact and being a lefty, I think it would ride in my Encore holster just fine (the bolt of an XP might be a bit of a nuciance in a lefty holster - might be better ways to carry it though....).  Another plus is that the overall cost would probably be less than an XP.

Is the accuracy potential of the MOA as good as the XP?

Another question:  Does the safety pose a problem being on the right side of the frame on the MOA?

Thanks.

Your son has done well!  My hat's off to him.  Congratulations!

Yes, I believe that it is stronger, based on some tests that Rich has done on the MOA.  You need to call him to get the specifics, but a improper load tore up a XP and then Rich duplicated that load and the MOA handled it fine.  I know in another situation a load basically was so hot it caused the primer to all but disappear but the MOA held true.
You can have a MOA built to your specs cheaper than you can a XP (Almost the 1/3 of the cost compared to totally tricked XP).  It is easier to get a great trigger pull with a MOA (and cheaper).
The accuracy potential is just as good.  I'm a lefty and I have had no problem using the safety.
The only downside to me or the advatange of the XP is that the MOA is slower to reload, and you do have to move the handgun off of your rest system to reload.  Rich has worked hard to make the MOA very practical for big game hunting, varminting, and LR shooting.

Thanks, Ernie.

Sorry to hijack the thread....  again, congrats on your son's success with both the muley and the antelope.  I remember well when my own son got his first, second, and third deer.  It's a near unexplainable feeling, that only Dad's that have been there can fully appreciate.

Regarding the MOA, now your really making me want one....:)

Do you know if there are limitations to what cartridges MOA will chamber (ie - WSM's etc.)?  I presume that they can be chambered with no problem.

I reckon I am gonna have to call the MOA corporation.  Thanks.

Rich will chamber the WSM's-Pressure is not the issue, it can handle it fine.
The WSM is as big/fat as he can chamber because of the limitation of the diameter of the action itself.
If you choose a WSM for a MOA (which a number of people have), rich will tell you that there will likely be some hang-ups with extraction.  What that means is the bottom of the head of the case will catch slightly on the top of transfer bar.  Rich is now taking some of top of the transfer bar off so one gets better extraction.  Rich can better explain if you decide to go that route.

Congratulations to you and you son. Both the muley and the antelope are beautiful. You are both very fortunate to have such a great season already.
