Report: U.S. spied on Americans' intimate conversations abroad!
« on: October 10, 2008, 03:33:22 AM »
Is the illusion of security really worth this?????

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Congress is looking into allegations that National Security Agency linguists have been eavesdropping on Americans abroad.

Government linguists say the U.S. eavesdropped on Americans, including military officers serving in Iraq.

The congressional oversight committees said Thursday that the Americans targeted included military officers in Iraq who called friends and family in the United States.

The allegations were made by two former military intercept operators on a television news report Thursday evening.

A terrorist surveillance program instituted by the Bush administration allows the intelligence community to monitor phone calls between the United States and overseas without a court order -- as long as one party to the call is a terror suspect.

I think it is a definite invasion of privacy. I am all for listening in on suspected terrorists but it is plain wrong to listen in on our soldiers conversations. Dale

I think it is WRONG!!!  If they spying on our military...our tools in fighting terrorist...what other boundaries will they break in the name of stopping terrorism.  Where do we draw the line?  Why is our privacy not a God given right that should not be violated w/o probable cause and a LEGAL search warrant or wire tap.

In World War II, for example, servicemans' mail was censored - meaning read by other people and if necessary, deleted in part or whole. This was to prevent intelligence leaks.  GI's in WWII couldn't call home like they can today, so mail was the primary form of communications.  I don't think that this censorship was done for any wrong or sinister reason other than to protect our war efforts and security interests.  In effect then, it was protecting those GI's from the consequences of security leaks.
Was the censorship wrong?  Did it work, or help in some way?  Was it an effective deterrent?

I believe all of us Americans believe that our intimate privacy is sacred.  But, how do we keep secure if we aren't "watching & listening"?

So, what is your solution for security??

the military has the Right to check all communication ! get over it , might save a life !

i was told once and have no proof that many phone calls in the USA are routed Thru. Israel as are emails . They are checked over there anyway . If true that would be wrong !
But it would prove that we have no privacy
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

NEWS FLASH they electronically listen to EVERY conversation and e-mail sent by everyone in the world unless it is in some way encryted or on a secure line. They are looking for key words and when those key words are used then it is flagged for human intervention to see if it is of further interest.

Seems like some folks would like terrorism stopped.
as long as it does not interfear with their lives, how often do you
go out of the country, or military have been told their mail, phone calls
and all communications we be monitored, do you hear them squealing?
where do you want to stop defending against terrorism since you say
enough is enough.

GB is correct; you have been "eavesdropped" upon since the 70s ! It is called ECHELON..just google it or check with wikipedia.

My grandson called from Iraq..he knows enough to keep his mouth shut about anything requiring a security clearance. He will not betray his "top secret" clearance. As far as personal or family stuff, anyone that would be listening in, wouldn't know him  from Adam..so what's the big deal.
The feds can listen to my phone calls or watch my e-mails all day, every day...if it means Americans are the least bit safer from terrorism. I have nothing to hide... We should all by now, realize that such things as telephone, word of mouth or the internet are NOT to be considered SECURE forms of communication in any case.
The fact that everyone here is using the internet, means that they are willing to allow a certain amount of vulnerability into their lives already..

BIG DEAL !!!!

Like others have said, every phone conversation is monitored by the other side, so for security our side have to make sure the people on our side don't give away too much information.  I worked for a Communications Group in Turkey, they monitored every phone conversation in the Middle East, and Europe, back in the mid 80s.  Most of the linguist were women, and lived in my dorm.  At dinner, or in the day room after dinner, they would laugh and tell about the steamy conversations they had heard that day between Russian Men at work, and their wives at home.  These women also picked up some very important information about Russian programs from phone conversations between men and their wives.  They also listened to all American traffic as well, in fact their is a sticker on every American phone warning that the US Communications people monitor conversations made on that phone.  It was no secret we were listening to the everyone in Europe, because the Russians made no secret they were listening to everyone also.

On any military installation in the US, every phone has a sticker that says your conversation can be monitored.  If you have something to hide don't make mention it on that phone.

News Flash, To those that don't know.  If you have a cordless phone, your neighbor hood kids could be listening in on all your conversations.  It don't take much, any radio receiver that can reach the right frequency.  Last summer while visiting my friend in Florida, his old electric guitar amp would pick up his sister's cordless phone signal.  We heard all her conversations anytime we were messing with the guitar.  Just like we listened in on her phone conversations when we were teenagers.  She laughs when we tell her about it, saying the only differance now is that we are no longer dirty teens, just dirty old men.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Now if it's "MIND CONTROL", it has nothing to do with being open minded to different points of view. Being that is it some "evil" machinery controlling peoples minds open mindedness is not a valid point.

Nice try Heather but completly invalid.

Oh by the way, when I was in Turkey we were not only listening to the military.  We were listening to civilians as well.  All telephone conversations in Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, and Africa.  Yes there was a lot of bed room conversations, but there was a lot of valuable intelligence gathered as well.
