I am looking for some insight about the USFA revolvers how is the quality etc.
I am looking at the model called single action in .38spl with a 4-3/4 barrell
or should I just bump it up and go for a Colt.

The USFA was offered for 800.00
and the colt for 1000.00 both new and same caliber

For absolute quality get the USFA. If you simply have to have the name get the Colt. By the way, I still own four Colts.

I am seriously considering returning to buy that revolver. or ordering one in 44 special
decisions decisions the new one would be a bit more money

Man that would be a touch descission. THe usfa is probably the better of the two guns but the colt says COLT on it!! Do yourself a favor and burn the plastic and pick up both of them!

Well I started looking at revolvers for a hunting handgun about a month ago and ended up with a long gun early on in this endavor a pre 64 model 70 carbine in 270, side track # one Very affordable. Now this I think I am going to go with the USFA.

I have been very impressed with the quality of the USFA guns. I toured their facility with the head engineer a few years back and the place is amazing. Here is my 5.5" Flattop Target in 45 Colt...

I ordered a single action from USFA a few years back, spent over 900 bucks for it tax and all, and have not been one bit sorry. I notice there are better deals now than back then. I'm impressed with the quality, and one other real big thing, it shot to point of aim with the loads I like, which is a big deal with a fixed sighted gun. Might have gotten lucky there, but from what I hear they spend some time regulating the sights on them. Looking at that pic of the target model by Zeus, I'm sure thinking that is a good way to go to be able to have some adjustment in different loads.

usfa stands behind there guns too. My buddy bought a 4 5/8s 45 colt a couple years back. Now this guy shoots ALOT. after many thousand rounds the gun was tired. The forcing cone was shot and it was getting a little loose. He sent it back for repair and they put a new barrel a new cylinder replaced the lockk work and refinished it and didnt charge him a dime. He told them up front how many rounds were through it and even though the round count was more then any 3 people would normally put through a gun in a lifetime they went the extra mile for him

I bought a USFA Cowboy 5 1/2" 45LC about 9 months ago. I was looking for a traditional SAA, and I looked at most of the italian imports and Taurus,Berretta, and also the new Colt 3rd Generation offerings. I've owned a number of Ruger BH's and they're fine working guns that will easily stand upper range hand loads, but I wanted a traditional SAA. .......Rugers are not SAA's in my mind.........

I chose USFA even though it was considerably more money than the imports. I reasoned it was worth the extra $$ to be made in USA and also close to where I live.
I've had this gun back to the factory to have presentation Walnut Grips fitted to the frame the correct way, sanded to fit the frame.
I too, toured the facility, as I work with similar machining processes at Marlin.
I couldn't be happier with the fit and function of this gun, and I felt like "family" with the welcome and support I received from the President and Vice President of USFA.
As far as customer support for their product goes, they are absolutely FIRST CLASS. I plan to purchase another USFA gun in the near future, based on the fit and function of their guns and their customer support.
If I were to describe the fit, finish and function of USFA guns, the only words that come to mind are "Swiss Watch" quality..........OH, and it shoots to POA Too.........What more could you want?
In closing, How does it compare to the 3rd Gen Colts?.......finish is as good or better, fit is and function are tighter and smoother with the USFA, at least the ones I looked at........

USFA makes a fine revolver and the finish is absolutely top notch.
I gave this to my father a couple years ago for his birthday.

I was looking for a .44spl and all that is on hand is .38spl in his shop if I custom order I probably will incur
additional costs

CGFF,

If I were you,......... I'd order the exact gun you want......... Nothing against 38Spl SAA's, but I know from a friends experience, that the 38 Spl chamberings will not be the investment that a 44 or 45 Colt will be.
in other words, your resale value will most likely suffer.

Joanie, are you looking to adopt another Father? ha ha. Beautiful gun and a very thoughtful gesture indeed. I had a Colt in 44 special and it was a wonderful gun. Very smooth and timed perfectly. Of course I don't know it if left the factory that way or was worked on at some point as I bought it used. I no longer have it as it was nickled and I thought it was likely not the best choice for a woods gun. It did not shoot to poa and I could get no one to turn the barrel as they were all worried about marring the nickle finish. So I whacked the front sight against the shooting bench at the range and brought it right on poa! It was a good shooter but had cylinder throats that measured .433. You cannot find fault with a USAF gun. As Lloyd said, if you want pure quality, get the USAF, if you absolutely must have a pony on the side of the frame, get the Colt, you will still enjoy it. 44 Man.

I have a USAF SA, 4 3/4, blue / case, with a spare 44/40 cylinder that I picked up about a month ago. Compared to my 2nd generation Colt SAA, and my 3rd generation Colt New Frontier, I would say the fit, finish, and timing is better. The case colors are brighter, and it is a little more accurate - about 1 1/2 inch at 25 yards, centered, with 250 gr Keith loads at about 950 fps in the 44 spec. I have not tried the 44/40 yet.

I plan on making a set of stag grips for it this winter, and using it as a "bumming around in the woods" gun.

If you reload, I would order one in 44 spec or 45 LC. If not, the 38 spec. is fine for target shooting, plinking, and small game hunting, plus ammo is a little cheaper to buy, and easier to find. If you plan on deer hunting, self defense, or are concerned about resale value, then you might be better served by one of the big bores.

My USFA is roll-marked "44 Russian and S&W Special".

Is nicer than any 44 Special Colt SAA that I have.

Their service is good too! I broke a part that I've never broke before in a single action, one of the little legs on the bolt broke. I took it a part, removed the bolt and the little part that broke off, put it back together and sent in the gun and the broken bolt on the afternoon of November 17Th, and just got it back today on the 26Th. Guess what...they re blued the cylinder, never asked them too, but it sure looks pretty. I think they felt sorry for me cause it had some pretty good holster wear on it and some scruff marks and a scratch or two. Wow...9 days isn't bad at all. No charge...but shipping over night from UPS to them is expensive, they will not go ground with a handgun in this State. They paid the shipping back to my house. Anyways..it's back in action again, and the cylinder locks up like a bank vault.

The quality of USFA guns is second to none. This 44 Special Flattop is one the best out of the box SA I have ever shot. Attention to detail is flawless, much better than Colt 3rd Gen. Frankly, I don't see how they can sell them so cheap.

Get one and you'll be very satisfied. Oh, their customer service folks are outstanding.

i have a matching pair in 4.75" case/blue: a Colt 45 and a 45 Colt Turnbull/USFS.

the Turnbull/USFA is much better built, but the Colt says Colt.

The USFA Sheriff's Special has my attention! For the price USFAs are a good buy.
