Low recoil load for Buff
« on: October 12, 2008, 09:12:25 AM »
I was working with my Buff and decided to load a mild recoiling load for kids and women. The first load was 41gr of Imr-4198. It must have been position sensitive because I had some hangfires with standard primers. Magnum primers did not hangfire. Velocity was 1788fps on a chrony and recoil was mild with the 300gr Hornady Hp. But wait, I had some 5744 on hand and tried 38.8 gr of that powder with the 300 bullet and standard primers. Wow, consistent ignition and 1 hole groups at 100yds. I think the velocity should be about 1800. And I thought 5744 was just for cast bullets. Any of you guys tried 5744 with jacketed bullets? If not, I am glad to report that in my gun it works fine.

I guess we have different ideas as to what constitutes "low recoil". I find the 300 grain bullet at 1800fps to be a pretty snappy kicker. I like the 300 grain, cast or JHP, down around 13-1400fps with 16 grains of Unique. Of course the buff classic is a heavy rifle and that soaks up a lot of the recoil but I still wouldn't think it a soft kicking gun for women and children.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Trail Boss and Cast's should give you as mild as a load as you can get.

Couple grains unique with a round ball on top is light enough... ;D
