Ruger Mark II Target model- accuracy?
« on: October 12, 2008, 04:54:20 PM »
What can you expect in accuracy from this gun? I am using the sights that came stock on the gun and Remington golden ammo.

With Remington Golden Bullets mine will stay around 1.5 to 2.0 inches from a rest at 25 yards. Remember that does not mean that yours would as you need to experiment with different ammo for best results. I find that mine shoots most brands quite well however and is less finicky than most of my rifles.

In my experience, Ruger autos come with barrels that are a little rough. They benefit greatly with some break-in. If yours is an older MK II, it is probably already broken in. To determine accuracy, you really need to consider a scope, red dot or a Ransom Rest. Mine has a red dot and seems to shoot into about an inch at 25 yds, but I think it is actually a little better than that.

the rem golden bullets have shot not so good for me. try several ammo types to see which shoots best. that is the way to make your 22lr most accurate.

I get good accuracy with Federal Champions and very good accuracy with Remington Subsonics.  I refuse to pay the price of CCI Green Tag.

I used to be heavily involved in competition shooting both formal NRA sponsored events and informal competitions often shot for money. The Ruger semiautos actually held their own quite well accuracy wise in the competition especially the local money shoots. I'd say on average the gun is quite capable of shooting five and perhaps even ten shot groups of an inch at 25 yards IF the shooter is and if you're using ammo it likes. Not many can take advantage of their accuracy potential without a scope. Using irons the groups will mostly be limited by your shooting ability not the accuracy potential of the barrel.

My Ruger 22/45 has the 5.5" bull barrel and it loves the Remington golden bullets.   on a rest it will make one ragged 10 shot hole at 25 yds.  The group opens up a little with Stingers.   I mostly use the Remingtons.

winchester dynapoints, federal american eagle 38gr cphp, and cci mini mag hp's have done well in my rugers. wolf match target as well, but at a lil more expense. cci standard is on my "to try" list.

Thanks for the replies, it looks like I need to try several different brands of ammo and I was thinking about a red dot scope too.  The old eyes aren't what they used to be!  How difficult is it to find an aftermarket base and rings as this older model isn't drilled and tapped for scope? Suggestions on the base/rings are welcome too.

Joe

My personal preference is for a drilled/tapped pistol, with the proprietary Ruger mount/rings (not the newer Weaver-style base). Everyone has their favorite.

I believe that B-Sqaure, Weigand Combat, and SoLow rings all make mounts that don't require drilling/tapping. I'm sure there are others, as well. The SoLow rings used to only come in the 30mm size, so a typical 1" scope wouldn't work, but a 30mm red dot would.

Happy Shopping!

Morn'in Shooter,

Well, my Mark II is the "slabside" on which I have installed a 2X Leupold.

I picked this scope up used and then sent it back to the factory to have the Paralax set to 25yds.

Now, with the ammo it likes, it will keep 10 rounds in a small ragged hole at the 25yd distance.

It shoots far better then I could hold off the bench, but fills the slot it is ment for of being a Minute of Grouse Head shooter.

I have some of the high end .22 target ammo, mostly ment for testing in my CLARK CUSTOM 77/22, but in the limited testing I have done to this point, the Mark II really likes the Wolf Match Extra.

Keep em coming!

I have an older (I believe made around 1991) Ruger MKII Stainless-Steel 5 1/2" Bull Barrel Handgun. I have modified it a bit in that I installed a Clark Custom Guns Steel Ruger Trigger, polished the Factory Sear & Hammer, added a On Target Blast Shield and had a local machinist drill & tap the receiver with the same hole spacing as on the factory drilled & tapped Rugers.

With either an older Illusion 1" Red Dot Optical Sight or a 2x Swift Handgun Scope I can shoot 20 rounds off a bench rest at our local indoor shooting range at a distance of 18 yards and have one ragged hole about 5/8" in diameter. This is with Remington BULK Golden Hollow Points. I have tried a lot of different target ammo in this Ruger, some that shoots better than the Remington but most don't.

I also have a Ruger MKIII 22/45 4" Bull Barrel that I modified. It doesn't shoot as well as the Ruger MKII I have but it shoots as good as I can with Open Sights.

As has been stated only you can determine what is going to produce the best accuracy in YOUR GUN. .22 LR Guns are a law unto themselves in that no two are identical in what they will shoot good or not shoot good.

I have been involved in Rimfire Target Shooting in one form or another since 1990. When it comes to Rimfires I guess I am a kid that never quite grew up.

Depends on ammo...period!
From 1776-1976 to Silhouette 10in. there's no real set ammo for Mark 1 and 2, but I can tell you, most would benefit with target speed brands of any type.
10X (MKII 15in.Custom Danny Sanchez Barrel) .375 10 shot (Open Sight) group @ 50yds. Sadly Mr. Sanchez has passed on.
Ely Standard works with most 5 1/2 to 10 Factory barrels.
Wolf Target gets along with my Win. Model 52 real well.
Name it, most standard velocities will work.
If hunting......use the highest velocity round your firearm can use.....game deserves respect concerning a clean kill.

I have a Ruger MK 2 with the 10 inch barrel.  At our gun club we have a Ransom rest and I tested a dozen or so different ammos (standard velocity, high velocity, and hyper velocity) at 50 yards.  The results were impressive.  Most ammos would shoot around 1 inch.

The most accurate ammo tested was Lapua Master M, which gave a 1/2 inch group!  The least accurate ammo was Federal Gold Medal with a 1 1/2 inch group.  And the big surprise as CCI Stinger (hyper velocity) at 1 inch group.

For a hunting ammo I would recommend Winchester Power Point (7/8 inch group).  And for plinking ammo you can not go wrong on Federal Auto Match or Remington Thunderbolt, which both came in right at 1 inch groups.

I've recently installed a Volquartsen "kit" (trigger with take-up and over travel adjustment, sear and hammer) to my Mark 2 target and the improvement is amazing.  Let off is crisp and measures 2 1/4 .

My Ruger MkII is the Government Model with the 6.5" bbl.  The target that came with the pistol is a 10 shot one hole target that was fired at the factory with the factory trigger (ugh).  I installed a Clarke trigger and this is the most accurate handgun I have ever owned.

Mine is a earlier model, probably one of the first to hit the shelves.  I traded my MkI T512 for the Government Model and after all these years still could not be happier with it.  I never had a problem with accuracy or rough barrels.  My only Ruger-angst was the original trigger which has been replaced.  I have shot target and more small game with this pistol than with anything else, except possibly mty 10/22.

But, Remington Golden ammo is not target ammo, period.  You can shoot much more accurately with ammo like CCI Standard Velocity, any of the target loads - Green Tag, Reminton Subsonics, Ely.  Winchester T3 target ammo shot dirty in mine.  Federal shot alright too.  Almost any of the target or standard velocity loads will or should shoot more accurately than the high speed stuff.  jmtcw.
