I had a late night visitor last night

When I went out to get the paper this morning, I discovered that I'd had a late night visitor. In speaking with my neighbors, it looks like he checked out their places too.  I've kept the M1886 in 45-70 handy today.

Those weren't made by one of those cuddly white endangered teddy bears were they?  You know that mean old Sarah Palin is all for lettin' big bad hunters hunt those poor little darlings.  ;D

Hey Sourdough:
I think it was a big black bear, given the size of the claws, but we have grizzes around here too (Houston on the Little Su).  The front paws were 8 1/2" wide and the rear ones were a little over 11 inches long.  When should these guys be going into hibernation?

I pretend to knowing nothing of bears but from what I have read I was of the understanding that with black bears you can add an inch to the width of front paw to get a pretty good idea of the height of the bear meaning one with an 8.5" wide paw would be 9.5' tall. I don't think they grow black bears that big do they? Or is it the length of rear I'm thinking of? If so that would make him 12' tall again a tad large for any bear.

Those are some impresive tracks, i don't know anything about bears
but that looks like a good reason to keep the 45/70 handy and tie down
the trash barrel. ;D

that would be one HUGE blackbear.  i have my doubts about that being made by a blackie.
