30-06 vs 2004 Dodge
« on: October 13, 2008, 04:01:30 PM »
My wife just killed her first deer.  It was a nice sized doe, too!

Unfortunately, she used our 2004 Dodge.  I told her next time, just to borrow my 30-06.

The really sad thing is, her deer cost more money than my Wyoming deer hunt.  And I at least brought home a deer!

I know this is going to get off topic quick, but what the heck.  What kind of vehicle would you recommend for hitting deer?  :)

I used a 2004 Freightliner Columbia last March. Was on I-70 right outside Ft. Reilly Ks. at the time. About a 120 pound spike at that. Damage to the truck was almost non existant, but a little different for the buck. :o

I've see a guy on a Suzuki GSXR (motorcycle) hit a deer at high speed.  It cut the deer completely in half...wasn't so good for the rider either.  He lived but it wasn't pretty.

The most I ever hit on my motorcycle was a bird.  It was pretty nasty though.  That was probably the only time I ever rode in shorts and that was the time a hit a bird with my front forks...it splattered back all over me.  :-\

LOL, this brings back memories.  About two months after my wife and I got married she hit a doe on a local highway on her way to work.  It ran off, and probably died later.  She was driving our Chrysler Sebring convertible and hit the brakes for the first one and couldn't do anything about the second deer.  I told her that will all the guns in our house she could have just used one of those.  She was pretty shook up about the whole thing and I finally convinced her that she didn't exactly hit an "A+" student.  Any deer that runs out in front of a vehicle just can't be that brilliant.

I saw an old ford f-100 ranger hit a 110 pound doe last year and the good news was that the truck was already so beat up that you couldn't tell the difference. The Bondo had bondo on it.

Back in 94', my best friends dad had just gotten a brand new F150 4x4 Ext. Cab XLT Lariat.  We were coming back from hauling a load of hay, around the next bend, there's a doe standing right THERE.  He slammed on the brakes, we smacked that deer dead on with the front of the truck and it went flying at least 30 feet off the road.  We looked at each other and thought "OH S*&T, he's gonna kill us!"  Upon inspection, other than some hair, there wasn't a bit of damage to the truck at all.

So I can recommend a 1994 F150 4x4 without hesitation as an ideal deer hunting tool.   ;D

1999-F250 4x4 (8-cyl gas engine >:( ) only 9.5 hours old :o :o  Bought it right off the line (5 PM) and immediatlely took it hunting 585 miles from FL to SC (2:00 AM).

B-buck did $3,800.00 in damage (radiator, transmission cooler, power steering, front bumper, grill, front end alignment, torsion-sway bars, etc.), almost ruined a two week hunting trip, and from that day until I got rid of it (in the 2nd month), that "dog" wouldn't hunt.

Never turned off the engine after impact and drove (like a powerless steering) truck for another 20 miles (till 2:30 AM) to my destination then it puked out its radiator, transmission AND steering fluid guts all over my host's front yard.

I will give 'er that, she got me to where I wanted to go.  ;D

I had a cousin hit a deer with her car in a suburban area of Chicago and killed the deer. The police officer said he was citing her for hunting without a license. He was joking, but she didn't find it funny. I asked if he offered to help her dress the deer and she didn't think I was funny either.

Sorry, I don't know what she was driving.

My mom knew a woman who hit a dear late one night driving an 80's transam.  The low front end on that car scooped up the buck, put it through the windshield and the antler stuck the woman in the throat.  I believe it killed her if I remember correctly.  That was quite a freak accident.

see how the front bumper is pushed upwards a little bit?  Yup, a bear caused that one night while driving back from the casino. It was pushed in some but we pulled the bumper out and its fine now.

My buddy drives a Mack garbage truck . He bagged a doe couple days ago , called his boss to report the incident , they showed up with a couple of guys and some coolers and cut away the fresh road kill.

I used a C-130 once and got a 4 pt. The touch and go turned into a full stop taxi back and shut down. He broke off a VHF antenna and gored a small hole through the skin below the battery compartment.

Wow Dave.  Talk about odds!!  ;D

Isn't the C130 what the Blue Angels have, called "Fat Albert"?  Have you seen them in show.  It's amazing what that C130 can do for such a huge aircraft.  Of course, the Blue Angels are amazing too!  ;)

Hard to top that one. :D

I used my brand new 2007 dodge ram. Just a couple of little dents in the driver side door though. I followed that deer into the woods and shot it (during season, used a tag) It had to die.

Brings up a good point.  I hope you all are spotlighting those deer, that's as illegal as it gets.

I killed my first one with a '96 Chevy Tahoe. I was on my way home from work just north of Bowling Green, KY. A nice sized doe ran out and caught my driver's side head light right in the head. Death was instantaneous, since I was doing about 55. No damage to the deer's body but at that speed and angle it ended up costing nearly $1300 to fix my truck. The driver's door was shifted back, broke the full right side head light, etc.

Problem was that I didn't have a knife on me at the time (I was spending a semester working at a juvenile justice facility where I couldn't carry a knife) so I had to leave the deer. I lived at a small apartment anyway, and I doubt the neighbors would have been happy about seeing a deer hanging on the back patio.

I hit a Roe Buck in Germany many many years ago. I was driving a DKW 2 dr sedan. The doors open to the front, it has three cylinders, each cylinder it's own carb, condenser, points and coil, 2 cycle engine. Hit it with the passenger front fender and it pushed it into the tire, terrible mess. As I was in the middle of the road I decided to try and get it off the road but had to do something about the fender. Grabbed it just in front of the tire and pulled hard. Whole damn thing snapped out and it looked like new! Never seen anything like it!

Back in 1984 I was a passenger in a brand new Nissan compact car (not sure of the model).  The car still had the temp sticker in the rear window when we hit a bull moose.  The front of the car took out his rear legs, he whipped around and his antlers came through the rear drivers side window.  No one got hurt, but the moose did not make it.  Fish and Game came and picked up the moose, and gave the remaining unshattered antler to the driver of the car.  He took it and had his last name carved in it and hung it over the front door of his home for years.  Lots of damage to the car, so I don't recomend using a compact Nissan.

A friend of mine was "making good time" in Wyoming several years ago.  He came over a rise in the rode to find a herd of pronghorn bedded in the road.  He was driving a Chevy Suburban, and claims to have killed 7 pronghorn, with a couple more severly injured.
If God did not intend for us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat???

The Montanan , it's better to use government vehicles to hunt deer. ;)

Spot lighting? Two landing lights were used.

My thoughts were: hey, it's a buck! ... little buddy you may want to turn back 'cause we'll win this one!

The most impressive after action report on an over torque on all four Herk engines I read was by the Alaska ANG with a C-130H.  The pilot firewalled the throttles to go around when a cow moose and two calves ran on the runway. There's a BIG difference between deer and moose! :o

BTW, the Florida ANG lost a F-16 when a feral hog ran onto the runway and the main gear cliped the hog on take off roll. The plane went into the nearby woods. The pilot was ok. IIRC he punced out.

XD9 , yes, fat Albert is a C-130. For a chunky ugly plane they will water your eyes.
