Opinions Please...on My Groups
« on: October 13, 2008, 04:28:39 PM »
Gents....while I thought I had the bugs lined (maybe do) out of my bullberry 243AI barrel.....Went to the range couple days ago and not quite satisfied with....(my)..or the gun's performance. Bullberry does granantee the barrel to shot less than an inch...The last two groups measured just over 3/4"

My handloading compents consist of ...Win brass...CCI-BR primers....RL-19 powder pushing a 85gr sierra Gameking. All 3 groups were shot with the same load. This is the only load I have shot in it so far.

Still going to test some loads using the Nolser 70gr ballistic tip with RL-15 powder.....reason using the lighter bullets is because the twist in my barrel is 1 in 10 twist...

Should I expect better or should I be pretty happy with the last two groups? I have alot of money invested in this rig....All groups were 5 shot....

1st group...terrible..

2nd group

3rd group

That third group shows real promise.

Indeed!
In that bottom group pdh,,,that outside shot, what number was was it in the sequence,,,just curious?
Looks to me, that it could be one of shooter error.
The other groups and most likely possiblity is,,,,,I'm assuming you started with a clean barrel, and that it can take some fouling rounds to settle in. 10 rounds seems high for this, but not unheard of. This is why I don't clean bore until accuracy starts falling off.
1-10" twist should be fine with most bullets up to 95 grs. and some 100's. With the 95 gr boattails and up however, I prefer 1-9" and faster yet for the 105 and up.
FWIW, I seldom shoot 5 shot groups. For load workup I shoot 3 shot, once I get something that shows promise I'll shoot a 3 rnd and wait 5 minutes, then shoot another 3 at same point of aim, wait 5 more mins. and shoot 3 more. I just feel this 9 shot aggregate gives me a truer sense of what the combination is doing. With lighter contoured barrel's, I wait longer.

Dave...the flyer in the 3rd group was the first shot........yes...I wondered if getting the barrel more fouled got it shootng better by the 3rd group. I use Ezzox solvent on my guns...maybe it takes a few shots to get the  barrel fouled enough to have effect on accuracy??

On the first two groups...I took my time after each shot....not getting the barrel very warm....on the 3rd group....I turned the  scope up from 12x to 18x and shot the shots just one after the other.

I felt the first shot on the 3rd group was good....did not 'think' I pulled it but maybe I did.....

I am going to test with other bullets....will use some match bullets...I want to get set up for long range target work and varmint hunting...want to get her shootng as tight as I can at 100yds...

I also have a 30-06AI eabco accuracy barrel....boy I just love it....shoots great....I am just worried about my consistentcy with this 243AI........

Thanks guys!!!

I'm sure turning the power up helped, as I am that it's a clean barrel/fouled situation. Ezzox is good stuff btw, and I find too that when I use it it takes a few more rounds to "settle in".

I have always had very good luck with NBT's. The 70-90 gr. and maybe the 95 should be good.

I have an encore with a 26" 30-06 barrel and with 150gr factory corelokts it groups just about like your first picture.  Are you trying to get this gun setup to hunt with, precision targets, or for long range shooting?  With those groups I wouldn't worry about missing a shot hunting.

If ya can see it ya can hit it !

We have in our area what we call...groundhog shooting matches. They shoot at life size groundhog targets at 300yds and 500yds.....Thought I would like to get my 243AI tuned up for that. They do shoot for scores.....plus I just love long range shooting. I just want the equipment for it.....

I will give the targets you mentioned...SHOOTALL...a try.......

In the first and last target there is 2 hole that are very Black are you cleaning the barrel and then Oiling it ??
to make the Blacker wholes
if so you may need to change something
Just a thought
