Would this be a waste of time?
« on: October 14, 2008, 03:00:58 AM »
Would using a bore button over the powder charge benefit a patch and round ball in any way?  I'm just wondering if it would help the patch out and prevent any loss in accuracy.

Thanks,

Some people claim it does protect the patch from burning. I prefer to just use a better patch and lube, I've never found any need for a wad under the patched ball. It may also help "keep yer powder dry" by preventing lube from contaminating the powder when the gun is kept loaded for a long period of time, as in hunting. But again, that can be overcome with a better choice of patch lube. There is no problem I can think of if you wish to try it, just one more thing to buy and to fumble with.

No, not needed for a patched round ball.  I use T/C Bore Butter with a cotton patch and never had a patch burning problem.

I use T/C Bore Butter Buttons over powder for Maxi-Balls and Maxi-Hunters as recommended by T/C and gives me great accuracy.

T/C Bore Butter will not ruin a powder charge.

It can prevent patch burn, especially if your using a patch that is too thin. It prevents the hot gases from blowing past the thin loose patch.

Just find a patch thickness that works well with your rifle, and you won't need it. (tighter the better)

I like to use a felt wad or wasp nest material under my solid base conicals to get a better seal, and it does seem to improve the shot groups.

What ever works for you and your ML is the right thing to use ;D

I always use a felt wad under the patched ball. It is no more trouble to do, because I load my speed loaders at home. I got a punch that cuts them from scrap felt so there is no extra cost. I like the fact that the lube never comes in contact with the powder.

Never used them on roundball, never saw any need.  I use felt on conicals lately, and it improves accuracy...a lot with the R.E.A.L bullet.  In my traditional, I use cotton patch and bore butter with great success, and very good accuracy.

OK, lets go back to simple geometry.  a fibre bore size wad, when the powder starts burning and slams it up against the base of the ball is going to force it to take what shape?  Convex against the back of the patched ball, perhaps?  So what would be required to seal the bore behind the ball.  pi x bore diameter divided by 2, or  1.57 x bore diameter    so for a bore wad to do any good, the wad in a 50 caliber would have to be almost .8 in diameter.
