called Customer service today
« on: October 14, 2008, 06:22:42 AM »
I called to see if they still had the muzzeloader barrels avalible.  They do and said that they plan on having them for a while.  I was told that it would be $120 for the barrel $30 for fitting and shipping $15 for primer carriers plus about 15 for me to ship it there.  This was for and 26'' stainless barrel.  So my next question is should i do it?  Or is there a better muzzelloader for $180.  I think that the original sidekick was only like $170 new.  Should have bought one then.  If i do do it I'll wait until after the fall rush to send it in.

I posted a reply in the modern muzzleloading forum. IMHO  send it in for the barrel.  For the price you wont beat it. I have a huntsman barrel fitted to a 243 frame. It shoots well and is nice to carry around. Amerian made and a good price.

I would shop around and buy a whole rifle (Sidekick) for around $200. Cabelas was selling the SS/Synthetic for $199 a couple weeks ago, but I think they are all sold out.

If you send your receiver in for a barrel to be fitted, the IDIOTS at Remington will test fire it and then leave the corrosive fouling in the barrel. It might take a few weeks after they test fire it before you get it back. Not to mention all the other nightmares like broken off front sights, horrible shipping boxes that let the components rub together during shipping. Remington was and is the worst thing that ever happened to H&R/NEF, they were that way 20 years ago, and it looks like nothing has changed.

One poster here went through a horrrible ordeal with a Huntsman barrel, brand new barrel with rust pits from test firing and leaving the corrosive fouling in the barrel for about 2 weeks before shipping it back to him. His front sight was also broken. Go search the rifle forum for more nightmares. No excuse for such piss poor customer service. No way will Remington ever touch another one of my firearms!

Thanks for the info.  I went to the local cabelas last week and They didn't have any.  I think that the supply is running out.  Do you call Cabelas?  I have read many of the stories that have happened since remington took over.  If h&r was successful before remington took over why wouldn't they just leave it alone?  If I do decide to do this I'll wait until remington has their act together; if they never get it together they will not have any of my business.

There are a couple of cheap NEF Sidekicks on Gunbroker.

As the guy who got the dirty barrel with the broken sight I should point out that after I cleaned it and remington sent me a new front sight and completely new set of stocks (you forgot that part) it shoots 3 shot groups with all holes touching at 75 yards (I hunt in a pocosin swamp so that's about max range).

That being said I'm not sure I'd try it again, I think this is a miracle, but I thought in the interest of full disclosure I should mention it.

No suprise at all Kevin.  I'm glad things worked out fine.

Someone with less experience cleaning mistreated guns (I've fixed up a fair number of pawn shop finds for myself and friends) probably would not have gotten the rust out of the bore without damaging more.  as is I guess it was just the most unorthodox breakin ever.
