Yes, i had a standard 5" model. loved it. it would shoot anything that i put in it. The mag that came with it new was a piece, i couldn't get it to feed worth a crap. front site was a bit small, littla hard to see unless the light was just right. other than that i loved it. just wish it would have held more ammo. thats why i sold it and bought a springfield armory xd.

RIA 1911 , sure I have had one for a few yrs now. Matter of fact I bought it when they were LESS than 300.00 , what are they now? Last I seen was about 350.00. For that price it is my opinion that you must be on the dope if ya aint got one by now. I am not sure what the fella above me had troubles with involving his mag , but mine and many others came with novak mags , a respectable mag for 1911's for sure.
My Ria gets alot of that big ol scary steel cased wolf ammo , and despite that ,it out shoots both of my springers and I feed them the $$ stuff. I do on occasion kick myself for not buying 2 , but I guess it still isn't too late.

A coworker, my youngest son and I all purchased Rock Island 1911 A1's earlier this year.  They are all wonderful.  Accurate, and very reliable.  They all came from the factory with polished feed ramps, very good European magazines, and a trigger pull that is almost too smooth.

I have some target 22 pistols and my Rock Island has a smoother trigger than any of them.  That actually can be a problem.  I have had a few occasions where, while at the range I pointed the M1911 A1 downrange and placed my finger on the trigger and it went off in a near accidental discharge.  Using good safety technique is important.  I discussed this with my coworker and he said that he experienced the same thing.  Neither of us are new to shooting sports.

There are two things that are minor nits.  The first is that the grip screws then to work loose and need to be re-tightened periodically.  Don't even think of using locktite unless you want to spin the bushings in the frame trying to remove the grips.  The second nit is that the GI sights are just that, plane Jane GI metal sights.  They are fine and you get use to them, but gosh, I will eventually want something else.

All, in all, the RIA 1911 A1 is worth every penny.  I wish I would have purchased mine earlier.  It has shot everything reliably I put in it.  It is very accurate.  The rangemaster at the range I belong to was the guy who suggested that this is one accurate and well priced reliable firearm.  He was right, it is a very good firearm.  All of the bad things that I had read about had been fixed.  My advice is buy one.

I've never been a fan of auto-loaders, I shoot a Contender for the most part, BUT, I bought a G.I. model last year off of a neighbor and other than the sights, can find no fault with it.  I don't regret the purchase.

Thanks guys.  I had been saving for a stainless Kimber, and while I was last in my favorite shop the owner handed me the RIA .45.  It is a compact model and was just over $300.  I think it was $ 349.00   I was tempted to buy it right then, but since I had never heard of them I waited, did some internet research and now after reading your comments will probably stop on my way home today and buy it.   It did have different sights than the basic GI sights.

Hopefully my wife won't mind...

A friend of mine bought a RIA compact. When I shot it the first time it had a great trigger. I shot it again sometime later, after 400 rds or so. The trigger was scary light, with almost no movement before release. Robert357s post reminded me of that. Not sure what's going on in the fire control system, but keep an eye on it guys! If this happens, be sure to have a good gunsmith check it out!
Other than that problem and the sights, I liked it a lot for the money.

Yesterday when I told my wife I "found" a gun I wanted.  She responded with, "okay what is it?"  braced for a large price tag.  When i told her it was just over $300.00 and because my dad had sold my older S&W .45 I traded to him, she said, okay, just go get it.   So tomorrow after I bow hunt in the morning, I'll be headed into town to purchase the compact RIA .45 and probably then head right out to a local range to shoot it...  Hope it comes with a book on disassembly.  Been a while since I had a semi auto that wasn't a Glock...    ;)

My reply may be too late to help...but I have  well used RIA GI I traded up a few weeks ago. I intended to sell it quick, but since playing with it a bit, I have about decided to keep it. I have even mixed ammo in the mag and it eats everything without a hiccup! Mine has some blueing wear from being carried in a holster, and is not pretty. About the fine sights, they work well if you have good eyes and plenty of time.

I have two, one 5 inch and a compact. I modified the 5 inch for IPSC and it works great. The compact came with good sights and worked fine. I put some nice grips on it and a carbon fiber trigger. Shoots great groups and is reliable enough for a carry gun. Here is the fun part, I bought a Kimber 22 slide for it. I got the one that has adjustable sights and bought some extra clips. I have won some pistol shoots with it. Can't believe how accurate and fun it is to shoot. Works great, looks great. Mine is the silver one and I shoot it on a blued frame so the two tone looks totally custom. Now I found out that RIA offers a 5 inch combat model with good sights and lots of features for cheep. These are mil spec firearms and most if not all colt and clone parts fit. There is a lot of aftermarket goodies available for these guns.
Have fun, shoot straight  8)

Again thanks for all the reply's.  I will buy the compact one on Thursday, and head to the range.  Any issues with disassembly?  I asked the guy behind the counter about it, and what he was explaining was confusing?????

Well, the RIA compact shot very well for the most part.  I admit that I went from the store directly to shooting it without a clean-up first.  It is really more comfortable in my hand  to shoot than my model 22 Glock is.

It also shot accurately.  The only issue was this.  It began with the first magazine, the slide not completly going all the way forward as it cycled. It was subtle, and I had to really look to see why it wouldn't fire the next round.  I pushed the slide forward slightly, and it fired fine.  The more I shot, the less it did this.  Possibly just needed a cleaning, or a break-in?  Any way it is all clean and slightly oiled up now and ready for a longer session of shooting.

Disappointed that it only came with one magazine, but I plan to buy 3 new, better mags anyway, so no big deal...

If you are going to purchase 3 magazines, I strongly recommend purchasing quality magazines!  There is a lot of junk out there.

I have purchased 3 Chip McCormick Power Mag, 8-round, magzines from Midway (giving one to my son) and been very happy with them.

The follower tilts a little and some folks don't like that, but others feel it helps feel the last round.  It has worked well for me.

I think the RIA Compact will be my next 45. I have 2 RIA's now. A GI that I have worked over & made into a Tactical model. Same with my 38 Super. I had a 45 Tactical, but it didn't compare to my home made one, so I traded it in on a rifle scope. Both pistols have Henie sights, modified & instaled by my gunsmith.

before damning a pistol for having a "too light" or "scary light" trigger, have a gunsmith check the pull wt. Many are not accustomed to a good 4# pull. That is NOT 'too light'.

Sharon,
After 45 yrs of shooting and and building more than a few 1911s, I'm vaguely familiar with the trigger. My concern wasn't the light trigger, it was with the dramatic change in both travel and pull weight in less than a couple hundred rounds. I didn't put a gage on it, but would bet the pull had gone from about 5# to less than 3#. I did suggest the pistol be checked by a gunsmith. I mentioned this in hopes that anyone experiencing the same thing have their pistol checked by a competent gunsmith.

stolivar,  nice looking pistols.  I will likely switch out the wood grips soon to something like you have on that compact.  I can't wait to get back out and shoot more.  It was a dream in the hand to shoot the Win white box ammo.  I hope the issue with the slide not completly going all the way back forward works itself out as I break the pistol in.  Otherwise, I can't find a complaint with this pistol so far.

The sights on mine look like what you ahve on that GI model.

markc:  Yep, it needs a breaking in.

Your ammo could also hang you up a bit.  White box is on the slow side.  I would buy 500 rounds of Sellier and Bellot 230 gn ball (850'/sec, functions my 1911s with 22 lb recoil springs,is reloadable) and about 4 more magazines (get 8 rounders from Chip McCormick), a large cup of coffee and a couple of frosted thingys or a good sammich and shoot that thing, like maybe 500 times or more.  It will be broken in by then, certainly.

I would start out with a clean, lightly oiled gun and shoot it until you use up your ammo - any way you want or can at your range, fast or slow, target, combat, IPSC, silhouette, whatever you want but have a couple of different types of targets to shoot at or you can get awful bored looking at one large hole in one long dead target.  Of course you want to bench it for accuracy before during and after to see if the groups shift.

I would bring a cleaning rag to wipe off any excess oils that may start to creep out from nowhere after the piece starts warming up and maybe something to run a dry patch into the chamber if it starts running sluggish and it isn't your hand starting to palsy after a couple of hundred rounds........ but I wouldn't clean it until I got home or if it needed some cleaning to function (but not with new, quality ammo).

Ah yes, your wife {Well Marc ol buddy, ya see, ya depends on us now to keep tight lip about this, so maybe if ya send us yer gun an alla yor ammo we'll shoot'm up fer ya (snicker, snort) an not tell yer wife, maybe or} you could always make it a family day at the range and find out from your wife how she thinks it handles.  Family oriented I iz............... Mikey.

Markc, that is not a GI. It is a compact officer size in . Close though.

I have the same grips on both my guns now. Both Colt wrap a round.

stolivar,  that one in the bottom pic with the longer slide?  Thought that was a GI, but the top one looks like mine, except for the sights..
Mikey,  with deer season starting up Saturday, I'm not sure when I will get to the range, but most of the ranges arouond here are rather boring, all the same distance to the targets.  There is another range I've never shot handguns at, so I might see if they are any different.  Love the little gun though, love it..

I bought a new one, GI type in 2007.  Have put around 450 rounds through it, very accurate and reliable gun.  The Novak clip (8 rounder) that came with it is mostly what I use, no problem.  I bought a GI surplus mag, that works most of the time, had two jambs with it, so I use the GI mag for appearance now as the original army pistol had the flush fit mag (7 rnds) in the old days.

My only complaint is the cost of .45 ACP ammo, so my other 9 MM's get shot more.  I also have to sight the pistol low and to the right to get it to center, fixed sites.  My 1851 Colt and 1860 Army also shoot that way, either it is me or Uncle Sam wants all his pistols to shoot high and to the left.
