Cleaning a huntsman.
« on: October 14, 2008, 11:18:53 AM »
Please bare with me as I may have covered this before just perhaps not to my liking. But with the huntsman receiver , I know there has to be corrosive crud getting inside the firing pin hole and elsewhere like that  , since I would rather not take it apart and soaking it in water seems like it would rust despite spraying oil inside the openings , how do you people clean the receivers to prevent the rust

I guess, since no one has responded in all this time, none of us do clean them.  I run gun scrubber or a similar product  through the receivers and once in a (great) while tear them all down.  As I have said, I'm old and I'm lazy;  I don't seem to be able to clean my guns as fast as I shoot them.  Pete

I to was beginning to wonder if anyone cleaned theirs , currently I have wiped the hinge area and face of the receiver area with hoppes #13 and been spraying the area around hammer/firing pin hole/trigger with stuff called hot shot , my concern is that some black powder residue is creeping into the receiver that I am not getting.
My flintlock comes apart so that I can get to everything but this is of course different

Thanks to this thread, I pulled my Huntsman out and found I hadn't cleaned it after fireing about a half dozen rounds a couple of months ago.  At the time, I had said "Self, it's getting dark, clean it tomorrow."  Forgot it.  Dragged it out dirty, said the heck with it, loaded and fired another dozen rounds with 209s and carriers without a misfire.  I put it back in the rack to clean tomorrow........if I can remember.  Maybe one of you guys can  post me a reminder?????

I just had a great idea....let's all get cleaning ladies.
Some one already had that idea.  A couple of years ago I was looking at outfitters that offered prairie dog shooting.  I came across one that offered the usual transportation in the field, a nice grilled lunch, cold non-alcoholic drinks and what they promoted most was their cleaning girls.  They would clean your weapon while you were using a different one.  Either you could bring your own cleaning solution or they would use theirs.  At the end of the day you would have a clean gun.  Needless to say, I never got a chance to book with them, as I recall the price was not in my budget.

It sounds wonderful, but definitely out of my budget too.  I suppose the cleaning ladies wore little French Maid outfits.

You know what??? I forgot to clean that rifle AGAIN.  Pete, get with it!!!  Perhaps I should bust the budget and hire them afterall.

Glad to hear my reciever is not the only one dirty. I take the barrel off, clean it, wipe down the outside of the reciever, put the gun back together and put a coat of oil on it..........then put it away. But lately I have sprayed some cleaner down the in the reciever and tons of garb comes out. So now I clean down in there every so often. Its amazing how that stuff can get in there!

Just be sure you don't get that brake cleaner on a synthetic stock, trigger guard, or the finish of a wood stock, it WILL ruin them.

It will also strip all the lubricant it comes in contact in the frame, but I wonder if it would be good for keeping latch shelves dry ??? ???
