Parrott Gun and Carriage
« on: October 14, 2008, 01:07:46 PM »
Here's a picture of the 2nd gun I built - It's a 2" calibre smoothbore Parrott style. A high-pressure hydraulic tube, with a big aluminium jacket cast around it. This was proofed for 8oz load, blanks only.
I built the carriage using ready-made wheels that were once fitted to a Royal horse carriage. I bought them from the company that makes the carriages the Royal family ride in. This gun is now used by the South Western Artillery, based in Bath, Avon. The carriage can be disassembled in a minute or two and transported in an estate car, along with the barrel. The wheels need a roof-rack !

Founder in 1986 of Historical Artillery Corps, later changed to Historical Artillery UK.
Builder of Cannons and models for South-Western Artillery, Fort Amhurst, Coalhouse Fort and private commissions.
Technical Consultant for two episodes of Scrapheap Challenge. Ex Pyrotechnic Safety Officer at Coalhouse Fort. I go trekking and survivalist camping - build experimental tents and survival equipment - caving.

Nice looking set up!
But I have to ask, you have been using Hydraulic tubing how thick is the wall? and how did you breech the tube?
I understand you are designing these for blanks only but what happens years down the road when the un-enformed un-educated might try a ball load?

Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

I never designed, nor made the barrel - That was cast by Colin Jackson, in Birmingham. It's a design that's common over here for re-enactment. The thickness of the tube wall is (from memory), around 1/4 inch - The thickness of the aluminium jacket at the breech was around five or six inches; at the muzzle end, something like 1 inch.
