Accuracy Of My 223 Handi
« on: October 14, 2008, 02:20:09 PM »
A few weeks ago I started a post here about the accuracy of my 233 Handi.  I stated I was getting about 2 inch groups at 100 yards.  I took a lot of flack from that post.  Tim (Quickdtoo)  said,  I was to use to shooting those Hi Point pistols.  I respect Tim and his opinion but I question his knowledge of Hi Point firearms.  NO,  their pistols are not target grade but they're more accurate than you'd expect from a under $200.00 pistol and their carbines are highly accurate for a carbine.

Graybeard did come to my rescue by saying,  did you have a solid bench rest?  NO,  I didn't.  I used my shooting bag as a rest and it was hard to hold the rifle on target.  Did I have any accurate means to actually measure my groups?  Again,  NO,  I was guessing.  It looked to be about 2 inches.

Well,  to make a long story short,  I went to the range this past weekend with my 223 Handi.  This time I had a sand filled suede leather shooting rest (you have to fill it with sand) that I bought at Cabelas for $10.00.  I fired a 3 shot group at 100 yards.  2 shots were about 1 inch apart,  the third one strayed about 4 inches to the lower right.  Was this the gun or shooter error?  I think it was shooter error.  Although the shooting rest was better than my shooting bag I still couldn't hold it on target as steadily as I need to.

One neat thing about the outdoor shooting range I go to is they have wall nut trees.  There's plenty of wall nuts lying on the ground for targets of opportunity.  I placed a wall nut on the fence post at 100 yards.  First shot I just barely missed it,  a little to high.  Second shot exploded the wall nut.  I can live with that.

I was teasing you JD, don't be so defensive, I don't know anything about Hi-points except Nonya gave you a bad time about them,  never touched one, no one around here sells them, so I've never even seen one, I considered buying a pistol last year, but I couldn't find one to check out. My point was that you were used to shooting pistols, doesn't matter what make.  ;)

Groups are measured center to center, but since that's not easy to do, measure from the outside edge of one to the inside edge of widest holes in the group.

Sounds like shooter error, but read the Handi Basics 101, those will help you get the best groups since the Handi isn't a bolt gun and needs some specific shooter input for consistent accuracy, like pulling the trigger all the way to the rear and placing the forward rest under the hinge instead of further out under the forend. How you close the action as well as making sure the gun is placed on the bags the same each time is just as important.

Shooting the rifle without the forend on it will tell you if the forend needs work, the 3rd shot flyer could be heat related on bigger cartridges, but not normally on a .223 from a cold barrel, but if it was still warm from previous shooting, it would apply.

BTW, wall nuts as in Black Walnut is just one word.....unless you have something called wall nuts I'm not familiar with!!  ;D

I'd reckon the 223 can outshoot the Hi-Point by a good margin.  If you want to test for accuracy a good rest is paramount...doesn't matter how accurate the gun is if you're on a weeble-wobble rest.

There is a great joke here, but alas, I don't think that it is appropriate.
