Where should I start
« on: October 15, 2008, 07:40:26 AM »
If I wanted to start reloading, where should I start?  I have never done it before and would appreciate some help.  I have a 243 and plan on getting a 308 in the near future.  Thanks.

start by buying the equipment... Since your a first time reloader I would look at one of the lee kits... They are good value for a beginner... Thats what I started with..

Pick up a good reloading manual and read it cover to cover. It'll let you know what's what, and may help make up your mind re: what brand of tool you're looking for.

Good manuals and read them, Listen to people here at GBs I've learned so much here its amazing,  Then look at presses.  How much do you plan to reload? Lee kits are a good start I've got a lot of lee equipment and it make good ammo and the classic cast single stage is hard to beat anywhere at anycost. Its a fun hobby and very satisfieing when you lite off some you rolled yourself.

I suggest you go buy the current version of LYMANS loading manual.

 TONS of useful info laid out in a manor that's easy to read and understand.

Once you have the basics or fundamentals down, you will be much better informed to make smart decisions on whose equipment you buy.

One thing I will suggest is you look into USED stuff. Used stuff sells for pennies on the dollar of the new stuff and as long as you buy a good name, you will not have any problems with "experienced" stuff. Then once you get some time on that equipment, you can buy newer and better equipment as the funds and necessity dictates.

Thanks guys, I think I know were to start know by the consensus here.  I don't know how much I will be reloading, here lately I have a hard time finding time to shoot.  We will see.  Thanks.

I will also start reloading in the near future, as no one know's what the future holds for ammo sales/prices  or reloading componets as what would seem to be a new world order type government on the horizon. I'm guessing that the straight walled cases would be easier to reload and will be looking into the 357, 30-30, 35Rem, 45-70 after my new new handi gets dialed in. -g

One nice aspect to reloading, is you can load as few, or as many rounds of a particular recipe as you like... it's nice when trying a new bullet weight/brand/style.
