410 / 45 barrel help

I just got a 45 / 410 barrel for my Contender.  I bought it used and am not really sure when to use the piece screwed in the end of the barrel.  Is that only when it is used as a .410?  Is that a choke tube?  Suppose I should have checked into this before I bought???  Thanks,

yep when your shooting 410s u use that take it out when u wana shoot 45 LC... but still use it when your shooting 410 slugs

 You'll like the .410, its pretty good for snakes and even home protection(although a guy would want something with a follow-up shot). I use mine to go to the range out here in Texas, we have rattlesnakes.  The choke tube is a TC choke that you remove for 45 Colt. The 3" chamber for 410 doesn't make the 45 Colt very accurate after about 50 yards.  Believe it or not, it's easier to fire with one hand. The recoil typically kicks upward if you are relaxed enough.  If not, you can use both hands but, it's going to push back! 8)

I just recently acquired a SST Super 14 .45 Colt / .410 Vent Rib Contender Barrel. Talk about a FUN BARREL. To date all I have shot it is for a bunch of pattern testing, but have taken a couple pests with it also.

As for the Pattern Testing, yes even though the Chokes are all supposed to be the same, they are not and produce different patterns in different barrels.

A buddy has a SST 8" Bull .45 Colt / .410 Custom Contender Barrel from Virgin Valley Custom Guns. He replaced his choke with a Magnum Research Choke for a BFR Revolver (which Magnum Research tells me they buy from Thompson / Center). My buddies short barrel just does not pattern as well as my Super 14 Barrel does.

Last Saturday we decided to switch our chokes, and it was eye opening. With the choke from my Super 14 in my buddies 8" his 8" actually patterned a little tighter than with his choke. My Super 14 with my buddies choke really patterned tighter than with my choke. 

We have been pattern testing at 16 2/3 yards and 25 yards. The .410 Shotshells we have pattern testes so far include:

Federal Power Shok 3" 4 shot
Federal Power Shok 3" 5 shot
Federal Power Shok 3" 6 shot
Federal Power Shok 3" 8 shot
Winchester Super X 3" 6 Shot
Winchster Super Speed 2 1/2" 6 shot
Rio 3" 8 shot
Hevi Shot 3" 6 shot

My barrel patterns everything good at 16 2/3 yards with both chokes. At 25 yards with my original choke the best patters were obtained with Federal Power Shok 3" 5 shot, Federal Power Shok 3" 8 shot and Winchester Super X 3" 6 Shot. With my buddies choke in my Super 14 Barrel (which is what I ended up with as we traded chokes) the best is with Federal Power Shok 3" 6 shot with all of my pellets but 10 - 12 inside of a 30" circle at 25 yards. I traced around a 3 pound coffee can for an aiming point in the center of the white paper and at 25 yards using Federal Power Shok 3" 6 shot it was averaging between 30 - 40 pellets inside of that circle.

My buddies 8" Barrel patterns the best with Federal Power Shok 3" 8 shot and at 16 2/3 yards produces good patterns.

The only critters I have shot so far with this barrel has been skunks. One of the first days I had it I rolled a running skunk at 25 - 30 yards with Federal Power Shok 3" 6 shot, killing the skunk stone dead with no unwanted odor from the skunk. I just swung the bead at the front of the vent rib in front of the running skunk and pulled the trigger and the skunk collapsed (much to my surprise) and never so much as twitched.

My goal was to go out this weekend with my 2 year old Yellow Lab and try to bag a Pheasant or two with the SST Super 14 .45 / .410 but since I dislocated my artificial hip last night I am probably not going to be doing a lot of walking this weekend. Yes the got the hip back in place but man are my muscles sore today.

I looked at these barrels as sort of a novelty and just something to play with. Since I actually started using one I now have a totally different opinion of them. I also think that the longer barrels produce better (tighter) patterns from what I have seen so far.

Larry,

I am looking forward to more of you 410 exploits. I have the 45/410, in a 14 inch SS barrel, for the Contender, and do really find it handy with Federal 3-inch 7-1/2 shot.

Well my 2 year old female yellow lab (Dakota) and I went out for a couple hours yesterday in hopes of finding a Pheasant or two. Well we did but unfortunately only Hens so I didn't get to try out the .45/410 Barrel. Hopefully this afternoon will produce different results.
