Replacement trigger for Ruger MK II
« on: August 07, 2003, 07:40:28 AM »
Am considering replacing the trigger on a new Ruger MK II.  Can the factory trigger be worked by a gunsmith to lighten and smooth the trigger?  I am also considering a Dayton Traister trigger.  Anyone have any experience with this trigger in a Ruger MK II?

I have not used the D-T trigger in the 77 MKII which is what I am assuming you were speking of.  I've used the Timney and another I can't remember the name of right now(CRS)...  They are a bit dicey to install but worked well when correctly installed.  I have used the D-T trigger on a small ring mauser(94-96 Swedes) and it was a total joke..  The D-T trigger had to be 'fixed' so that it would reset before I could install it..  Never more quoth the raven!!  The 77 MKII trigger can be worked to a resonable trigger but I always tell the client, 'If it comes to grief, I install an aftermarket'..  I haven't had to install that aftermarket yet but have come close...I also had bad dreams with the safeties on the 77MKII's...

I put a timney in mine.  Had to remove a little wood, but have never been sorry.  Well worth the $$s spent.

charlesr:  Go with what the gunnut said and stay away from those D-T triggers.  My gunsmith took a look at the instructions that came with one I ordered for my M38 Swede and said 'no way', and for the same reasons gunnut stated.  I sent it back.  I have used Timney triggers before and like them and most recently had a Bold Trigger installed.  I like that just as much.  It sounds like any aftermarket trigger that has an adjustable trigger pull and an adjustable 'stop' to limit overtravel should make you happy.  Hope this helps.  Mikey.

I have the Timney trigger on my M77 MKII and it has the best pull of any gun I have except for my Remington 541 22lr.

I can recommend the Timney. Very happy with their trigger in a Ruger M77 MK II. I had the gunsmith reuse the Ruger factory trigger spring rather than the Timney spring and obtained a nice 2 1/2 lb. pull weight.

Trigger jobs

It seems that nearly every rifle I own needed a trigger job of some sort before I felt comfortable with it. Most of which I have done myself. I've done quite a bit of machine shop work along with a course in metal shop or I'd be afraid to tackle such a job. The gunsmith's that do this type of work really earn their money.

Thanks guys for all the input.  I decided to order a Timney.  I have used Timney's and Boyd triggers before and been pleased.
