cast bullet for 30-30
« on: August 07, 2003, 09:24:25 AM »
Hello everyone,

A customer of mine is seeking a proven cast bullet for Cowboy action shooting to be used in his Winchester model 94. So far his efforts have been very inaccurate.

Does anyone here use one of these carbines with accurate cast bullets and be willing to tell us the mould make and number and the sized diameter that they found to work best?

Thanks in advance,
Rick from NZ

Rick,
I get good results with the Lyman#31141 or,as it is now alled,#311041.
It weighs between 169 and 175 grains, depending on the alloy, etc.

Rick,

THE classic cast lead bullet for the .30-30 is the Lyman 311291, coming out at about 170 grains in #2 alloy.

The round-nose profile and crimping groove allows you to duplicate factory .30-30 cartridge length.  The long boreriding surface makes for good chamber alignment and accuracy.  My shooting friends and I have used this mold for nearly 30 years, and it is my favorite for the .30-30 Winchester.  It has also proven very accurate in other .30 cartridges like the .300 Savage, .30-40 Krag, .30-06, .308 Winchester, etc.

For reduced loads ("MIDRANGE") in the larger .30 caliber cartridges, it is superb.

Size your bullets to 0.309" for the standard .308 groove diameter barrel.  For other groove diameters, size to 0.001" larger than groove diameter.

You will NOT be disappointed!.
