Barrels, Logs or Buckets? Which one works the best? I have used the 5 gallon bucket wired up the tree about 5 feet ( Helps tell the size of the Bear when he stands or climbs to get at it) And a doggie dish wired to the bottom of the tree truck with liquid sweets.

All have benefits, but are not always legal. Here in MN for example, everything has to be biodegradeable. So logs are primarily used, not much else of an option. I have seen melon halves used in place of buckets, and different other tricks to get a bear to pose, stretch , reach or otherwise position himself to insure size and best shot placement.

Baiting bear is so much fun.  Yeah.  This week we have had two buckets torn off the trees - one missing entirely.  One bucket split in half.  One lid missing - searched but couldn't find it.  Bales torn off the buckets.  The only requirement we have in Maine is that we remove the buckets, barrels, etc. when we are done.  Of course, thats us, not the bears who take the buckets.  You wouldn't think they could go far with a white 5 gallon bucket would you.  I think they get their head caught between the bale and bucket and then take off with it.  Now the lid is another matter.  A forest frisbee maybe.  Good luck to you all in your hunt.

:D In WI  you cann't leave any plastic or metal stuff at bait similar to MN. We dig a hole , cover the bait with logs, and pour the sweet stuff on the logs. Some guys bury a hollow log with the end sticking out that they can place a large rock over. I never cared for hauling logs in with me. A hole I don't mind carrying.
